The World Social Forum returns to Brazil

The World Social Forum, active in the city of Porto Alegre since 2001, is an unmissable reference for the Latin American left.

BRASILIA, Jan. 23 — The World Social Forum (WSF), established in Porto Alegre in January 2001, has returned to its place of foundation, where it began yesterday Monday with a program that includes more than 150 activities, PL reported, citing the Portal Brasil de Fato.

Social, political and cultural debates are part of the event, which is curated by the trade union centers and popular movements of the state of Rio Grande do Sul and all of Brazil. On Wednesday, the traditional WSF march takes place on the streets of downtown Porto Alegre.

The concentration will take place at Largo Glênio Peres and continue to Plaza de la Matriz, where it will end with a political-cultural act, the office said.

“With the victory of democracy in October 2022, Brazil has opened an opportunity for itself and for the world in the fight against fascism, racism, patriarchy and inequalities,” emphasized the organizers when calling for the 2023 edition.

They specified that this year’s elections mark a change of course in the largest country in Latin America, following the victory of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

“This change is popular, it’s democratic, it’s black, it’s indigenous, it’s feminist, it’s in defense of the environment and it will only be effective if there is popular organization and mobilization from the start,” they stressed.

The organizers explained that due to the short time available for the call and mobilization, this edition will focus on the realization of self-governing activities and convergences in cooperation with the Rio Grande do Sul Legislative Assembly.

The site recalls that the WSF was born in 2001 with the presence of organizations and social movements that, based on an initial proposal, convened themselves and mobilized for a major meeting in Porto Alegre against the neoliberalism represented by the World Economic Forum. The It happened at the same time in Davos, Switzerland.

According to Brasil de Fato, “After a period of intense debates about the future of the social struggles and the process itself, the WSF returned to Brazil with the perspective of serving resistance movements against the advance of neoliberal forces and their attacks on the fledgling democracies in Latin America”. .
