On Wednesday, the US Department of Justice accused Shahram Poursafi, a member of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards, Iran’s most powerful military power, of attempting to organize a conspiracy to target John Bolton, a prominent Republican politician and former national security adviser, in the US between 2018 kill and 2019.

According to the Justice Department, starting in October 2021, Poursafi would have tried to pay some people up to $300,000 to kill Bolton, likely in response to the January 2020 assassination of Iran’s most powerful general, Qassem Suleimani. However, Bolton’s damages failed, despite attempts by Poursafi to continue his efforts through March 2022 in various ways. The department said the case is being investigated by the FBI, the US federal police’s investigative agency, and that Poursafi is currently on the run abroad.
