“I’m not against capitalism. For me it is the working system. The only thing is he wanted a part of his business,” he admitted. Fernando Araujo in the documentary that premiered this week Netflix and it is led by Matthew Gueilburt. Named The Thieves: The True Story of the Heist of the Century and unlike other similar, the new production Made in Argentina (that country’s original productions department) has an advantage over the others: the four involved speak after serving part of their sentence. Books have been written about the case, countless hours of television and articles in newspapers and magazines about how four men robbed the Banco Río de Acassuso in January 2006. Between 90 and 100 million dollars is the number calculated between so many versions, mysteries , fights and anecdotes. A calamity that was hailed as revenge, then as a perfect plan, and is now part of Argentine popular culture. The closest project to this documentary was The theft of the centurythe hugely successful film Ariel Vinograd which premiered in 2020 William Francella Y Diego Peretti. But there’s something that makes a stark difference between the Netflix documentary and many others: The four convicts speak and act the facts for the first time.

The protagonists are the four key elements of this production: Fernando Araujo, Mario vitte Sellan, Ruben be to of the tower Y Sebastian García Bolster, But there is more: one of the chief negotiators of the police, Miguel Sileo, of a bank teller and the interesting perspective of the director who had the luxury of creating a special atmosphere for each of the narrators. “I made up a story for each one and drew on different films for each character,” he confessed. Matthew Gueilburt a Infobae.

From using mannequins instead of people in the scenes of the tower Create a Hollywood appearance for the man in the gray suit in the sequence Theater Bartolome Maccio is located in San Jose de Mayo, Uruguay too vitte, the scenes on a motorcycle Araujo in the best style fire against fire either The town, down to this workshop with neon lights Fast and Furious to the bolster, the perspective of Gueilburt it is unique and brings an unexpected glow to a story that seemed to tell nothing new.

“The use of weapons was not my style of what I was trying to find: artistic theft. We created the Donatello plan, not for the artist, but for them Ninja Turtles. They were in the sewers, doing martial arts and green as cannabis,” admits Araujo, the thief known as an artist. From this to other information, such as the construction of the Canyon Power and the tool specially made by García Bolster to open the safes faster, everything is told in the first person and gives a different color to the story, and they absorb the story very fluidly during the nearly two-hour duration of the documentary. Not only were there juicy details, but they themselves offered to tell their truth in front of the cameras.

“16 years after Argentina’s most famous bank robbery, in which a group of men stole and vaporized millions of pesos, this new Netflix documentary from Argentina presents a comprehensive body of work that includes testimonies and scenes re-enacted by its protagonists, the true story told by the thieves themselves, as well as the guards, police officers and hostages involved that day,” reads the official synopsis.

“Theft becomes a vice. It was like filling a gap,” he said. Ruben de la Torre, known as the Thug. García Bolster, the engineer, distanced himself from the others and clarified: “They ask me: ‘Did you steal?’ No, I worked, I took it as a job.” On the other side of the robbery, Sileo, the chief negotiator, also had his perspective impregnated in the documentary: “One of the basic things that thieves have, and that’s why they get locked up, is ego.” Each testimony was collected through lengthy interviews conducted by the director with the protagonists and later during the construction of the scenarios, the filming of the scenes and the statements on camera. Everything happens around the reconstruction of the robbery, shown with a mockup of the bank, where those involved will be added later in post-production.

The Thieves: The True Story of the Heist of the Century It is a production that, in addition to the four voices that starred in this story, has a story executed as fiction but with the complexity of having a visual style for each voice, including a reconstruction for each step of the robbery before and after, and each member’s charisma, delirium, and digression. A documentary that not only contributes something new, but also entertains without having to force the real protagonists.
