The heartwarming relationship between Sir Ian McKellen, 82, and his co-star, 29, is progressing, but one actor warns the LOTR star is “not really a husband”.

Sir Ian McKellen’s heartwarming relationship with his co-star Oscar Conlon-Morrey seems to be moving fast – there’s even talk of engagement.

But a well-known actor has admitted the Lord of the Rings star, 83, “is really not a husband” after the young actor, 29, said he is “the new love of his life”.

Ian is currently starring in the acclaimed Mother Goose, while Oscar will play his son Jack on stage.

The co-stars spent New Year’s Eve together with Oscar, telling his followers on Twitter: “I saw 2023 at the house of the new love of my life.”

However, a well-known actor who shared the stage with Sir Ian has his doubts. “Oscar has shared his big plans with McKellen with friends and family. He even said he thinks they’re going to get engaged,” he said.

But he warned: “McKellen hasn’t had a boyfriend in 20 years. He’s really not a husband. He doesn’t want a man living in his house. He enjoys having someone when he’s on tour.

‘McKellen is infatuated; then, as quickly as he got into them, he fell out with them. There’s no way when he’s out of the bubble of that panto that he’s going to have this guy rattling around with him in East London,” he added.

The New Year’s post was accompanied by a picture of the two men smiling broadly at the camera with their arms around their shoulders.

Last year Ian revealed he never had a chance to tell his parents he was gay as they both died when he was young.

The actor has been open about his sexuality since 1988 but sadly lost his mother Margery at the age of 12 and father Denis at the age of 22.

When asked by Jonathan Ross if he was close to his parents, Ian said: “As close as possible if your mother dies when you’re 12 and your father dies when you’re 22.

“For example, I never told them I was gay. I haven’t seen any of my best work. But I only remember her with pleasure.”

Ian was born in Burnley and later moved to Bolton where he grew up in a religious household.

The actor discussed coming out in his 40s, saying it makes his relationships with his family and friends that much better as he’s not “hiding” anymore.

He said: “I’ve never stopped talking about it since. Lost time made up. It changes your life from the ground up… I discovered myself. And everything was better.

“My relationships with family, friends, strangers, and work have improved because I’ve stopped hiding.

“Up to that point, my acting was really about disguise, and then once I felt like I was myself, it was about telling the truth, which was a lot more interesting.”

When asked if he offered advice on coming out, he added: “I keep giving them advice and I’m like, ‘Oh come on, join the modern world, it’s not the same. You will not be put in prison.”

“That was my dilemma when I was a kid, if I had said I was openly gay I could have risked being prosecuted. That’s no longer true. We have very good laws in this country.”
