Media concentration affects democracy says Atilio Boron

The pressure for new and timely new elections in Peru is increasing

The President of the National Assembly of Regional Governors (ANGR), Rohel Sánchez, said that President Dina Boluarte only replied that the first responsibility rests with Congress – which cannot reach a consensus for progress – which always delimits before the majority calls for resignation demanded, despite the fact that a new poll reflected the majority nature of that claim.

The poll, conducted by the Ipsos company, found that 76 percent of the population want his resignation and 74 percent oppose his management, similar percentages to previous consultations by the non-governmental institute for Peruvian studies and the Datum company.

The leaders of the ANGR and the Association of National Universities of Peru (Aunap) signed a document entitled “Manifesto for Peru” which they presented to the President at a hearing at the Government Palace last night.

The visitors suggested that, faced with the serious political, social and economic crisis, Boluarte committed himself to both organizations “to ask Congress to approve the necessary reforms so that the elections can be brought forward” or face the possibility of resigning test.

In addition, the document calls for an independent commission of inquiry to determine the responsibilities for the deaths of those registered at the social protests (48 in riots, a police officer murdered and 11 in accidents and other situations related to the demonstrations demanding Boluarte’s resignation ). .

The commission, he adds, must be made up of representatives from civil society organisations, professional associations, churches, the executive and the legislature.

She proposes the initiation of regional dialogues involving the regional governors and rectors on the demands of the population taking part in the protests.

On the other hand, neoliberal political commentator Augusto Álvarez stated that President Boluarte is wrong if she believes that since the social and political crisis she will continue to govern until 2026 (when the mandate of ousted and imprisoned President Pedro Castillo ends). deteriorate.

Álvarez suggested that the President should lead popular sentiment calling for early elections as a way out of the crisis, and even march with the people to the Palace of Parliament and demand that Congress (with a right-wing majority) conclude early elections feasible .

But critics of the president claim she has betrayed her voters by aligning with right-wing parties defending her stay in parliament.
