THE North Korea ordered the detention of five days (from this Wednesday 25th to Sunday 29th). Pyongyang, for unidentified “respiratory diseases,” the local press reported. The North Korean government has stressed that residents must undergo multiple temperature checks daily. This is the first lockdown in the city since North Korea declared victory over Covid19 in August last year. The notice does not mention the coronavirus, but it does indicate that among the ills spreading in the capital is the common flu. The government order was issued a day after NK News reported that residents in North Korea’s largest city appeared to be stocking up on groceries in anticipation of the lockdown. It was unclear if other parts of the country faced similar measures state media did not announce such measures. North Korea first recognized a Covid outbreak in May 2022, but declared victory over the virus shortly thereafter, in August. However, the dictatorship does not state how many people have contracted or died from the disease.
