The NHL has backed down after Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis was among critics of its Fort Lauderdale job fair next month, calling it “discriminatory” after an ad barred certain groups of people from attending.
The National Hockey League had scheduled an event called the “Pathway to Hockey Summit” for February 2 to help “diverse job seekers pursuing a career in hockey.”
A since-deleted post on LinkedIn revealed that the event was open to “participants 18+, US-based and identifying as Female, Black, Asian/Pacific, Hispanic/Latino, Indigenous, LGBTQIA+, and/or a person with a disability.”
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis was among the critics of an NHL job fair, calling it “discriminatory.”
It added, “Veterans are also welcome and encouraged to participate.”
There was significant backlash to the advertisement, with Fox News reporting that DeSantis was among the harsher critics.
In a statement, his spokesman Bryan Griffin said: “Discrimination of any kind is not welcome in the state of Florida, and we do not subscribe to the keen notion that discrimination should be overlooked when used in a politically popular manner or against a politically unpopular one population group.
“We fight all discrimination in our schools and in our workplaces, and we will fight it in places of gathering or activity open to the public.”
The NHL has since backed down, deleting the job posting from LinkedIn and saying everyone is welcome
He added that the NHL “should immediately lift and denounce the discriminatory bans it has placed on attending the 2023 Pathway to Hockey Summit.”
In a statement to Fox News, the NHL said that “the original wording of the LinkedIn post related to the event was incorrect.”
The league added, “The Pathway to Hockey Summit is an informational and networking event designed to encourage all individuals to consider a career in our game – and particularly those who may not be familiar with hockey ‘, draws attention to the possibilities offers.’
