The National Hockey League had scheduled an event called the “Pathway to Hockey Summit” for February 2 to help “diverse job seekers pursuing a career in hockey.”

A since-deleted post on LinkedIn revealed that the event was open to “participants 18+, US-based and identifying as Female, Black, Asian/Pacific, Hispanic/Latino, Indigenous, LGBTQIA+, and/or a person with a disability.”

There was significant backlash to the advertisement, with Fox News reporting that DeSantis was among the harsher critics.

In a statement, his spokesman Bryan Griffin said: “Discrimination of any kind is not welcome in the state of Florida, and we do not subscribe to the keen notion that discrimination should be overlooked when used in a politically popular manner or against a politically unpopular one population group.

“We fight all discrimination in our schools and in our workplaces, and we will fight it in places of gathering or activity open to the public.”
