In its third season, Din Djarin and Grogu’s adventure takes Baby Yoda, the bounty hunter, to his homeworld of Mandalore. Check out more details revealed (or hidden) in the trailer:

BoKatan confirmed?

Although the trailer hints that BoKatan is from The Mandalorian season 3, she can be seen in the video as a group of Mandalorians appear at the very beginning and cross a rocky desert. The woman leading the group appears to be katanlike in shape from the shape of her helmet. Some fans are speculating that the group is Death Watch from Star Wars: Rebels.

Another scene hints at the character’s presence in the new season: chasing ships across water, TIE Fighters chase a Gauntlet ship very similar to BoKatan’s. The scene switches to Din Djarin piloting a ship, but it’s his N1, not the Gauntlet that was already established as Death Watch’s mode of transport last season.

Changes in Nevarro

The Kovanian lizardmonkeys are shown in detail in the trailer and their presence is not only exotic, but reflects the changes on the planet Nevarro following the rise of Greef Karga to magistrate: the monkey lives free, very different from the first season of The Mandalorian, when the creatures were seen trapped in cages and turned into street food on the planet that served as the base for the Bounty Hunters Guild.

All is not well on Nevarro, as evidenced by the statue of the droid IG11, which appears twice in the trailer. The statue, which commemorates the exploits of IG11 in Season 1, is first seen behind Din and Greef, with the robot’s leg over a Stormtrooper helmet. However, by the end of the video, it appears to have been destroyed in the midst of a conflict.

Between season 2 and the new one, Grogu had some adventures in The Book of Boba Fett, which among other things earned him a sturdy Beskar chain armor. When Baby Yoda appears in the trailer, you can see the chain mail underneath his coat.

Fans will recall that in The Book of Boba Fett, Grogu had to choose between sticking with a lightsaber and continuing to train with Luke Skywalker, or sticking with the Beskar Armor and returning to the Mandalorian Baby Yoda chose to sideline return bounty hunter friend.

Another big change affecting Grogu is more subtle: the character’s memory seems to come back and become clearer, with more detailed flashbacks involving Order 66, the purge of the Jedi after the rise of the Empire. There is a scene in the trailer showing several Jedi preparing to defend Grogu from an unknown threat. Season 3 is expected to finally reveal who saved Grogu from Anakin Skywalker who might even show up in the full version of this flashback.

Back on Coruscant?

Among the Star Wars worlds featured in the trailer, Coruscant appears to be one of the most recurring settings from the original Star Wars trilogy. Coruscant, home of the Republic, Empire, and Jedi Council, is a superurbanized, futuristic world filled with flying cars. The planet was introduced in Return of the Jedi and also features frequently in the Star Wars: The Clone Wars animation.

In the trailer, Dr. Pershing is shown traveling in a convertible flying car through the skies of a gigantic city very reminiscent of Coruscant, suggesting ties to both the New Republic and the villainous Palpatine.

On the other hand, it’s possible that the planet is Hosnian Prime, headquarters of the New Republic at the time of the series, after all Pershing was captured by Din at the end of Season 2 and is likely a New Republic prisoner.

New threat: Snoke or Thrawn

The trailer makes clear the emergence of a new threat, with Carson warning Teva that something dangerous is happening “out there,” in what appears to be a nod to the Outer Rim. The series has always hinted at possible connections to Snoke and the First Order, and perhaps Teva is about to find out about their existence. Or maybe it’s Thrawn, the villain mentioned in season two in which case the storyline could set the stage for the Ahsoka series, which also premieres in 2023.

The third season of The Mandalorian will premiere on March 1, 2023 exclusively on the Disney+ streaming platform.
