Beirut, 3 November (EFE) .- The Lebanese Parliament today backed the continuation of the interim government, the validity of which has been disputed, and will meet again on the 10th to try to elect a new President of the Republic, a vacant one since Monday Position due to the lack of consensus in the House.

The Lebanese Parliament decided in its session today that Najib Mikati’s interim executive should remain active, despite the decree by which former Lebanese President Michel Aoun last Sunday, one day before his mandate expired, accepted the technical resignation of this government, reported the National News Agency (ANN).

The Cabinet of Ministers had been in the meantime since last June, and Aoun’s decision was an attempt to prevent the government from having the legal capacity to temporarily take over as head of state if he left office without having appointed a successor.

For his part, Parliament leader Nabih Berri reconvened the chamber for next day 10, when his fifth attempt to appoint a new head of state will take place and the first since the presidency was left vacant earlier in the week.

However, according to ANN, Berri, who announced yesterday, Wednesday, the failure of a dialogue initiative between the different parliamentary blocs, stressed that “in order to reach a solution, a prior agreement on a candidate with minimal support is essential”.

No bloc has had a majority in the chamber since last May’s general election, making it even more difficult to reach a minimum agreement in Lebanon’s polarized political spectrum, which is governed by a complex sectarian system of power-sharing. EFE
