The Last of Us has 4.7 million viewers in HBO’s second-biggest debut after House of the Dragon
The highly anticipated dystopian drama The Last of Us, directed by Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, drew 4.7 million viewers on linear TV and HBO Max on Sunday.
The post-apocalyptic series, set 20 years after a global pandemic, marks the cable network’s second-biggest debut after House of the Dragon’s historic 9.986 million viewers last August.
“Our focus was simply to make the best possible adaptation of this beloved story for as wide an audience as possible,” the showrunners said in a statement Tuesday.

In it, Joel (Pedro Pascal) is tasked with transporting 14-year-old Ellie (Bella Ramsey), who is miraculously immune to Cordyceps infection, from a quarantine zone in Boston to the west coast, where a cure is being developed.
The parasitic fungal infection – inspired by the true Ophiocordyceps unilateralis – killed 60% of the population and has four stages of infection, making humans increasingly resemble zombie-like monsters that use echolocation.
