The head of US bishops calls Joe Biden a ‘fake’ Catholic, warns religious leaders across the country

The chair of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops, Archbishop Timothy Broglio, has issued a statement rejecting President Biden’s claim that some bishops are doing well using taxpayers’ money to perform abortions, while another bishop blames him of being a “false Catholic”.

Broglio said the Catholic bishops’ stance was unified in their commitment to the preservation of life and their efforts to make abortion unacceptable.

He also stated that using taxpayers’ money to perform abortions would violate people’s religious beliefs and violate their right to live in accordance with their beliefs.

“The Catholic Bishops of the United States are united in our commitment to life and will continue to work as one body in Christ to make abortion unthinkable,” the archbishop said in a statement.

A reporter asked Biden a question last week to reply, “Catholic bishops are demanding that federal tax dollars not fund abortions.” Biden responded, saying, “No, not everyone does, and neither does the Pope.”

“Taxpayer funding for abortions would force people in good conscience to engage in this grave evil against their will. It would go against our right to live in accordance with the tenets of our faith,” said Archbishop Broglio, who also heads the Archdiocese of Military Services USA.

Meanwhile, Bishop Joseph Strickland of Tyler, Texas, one of the most outspoken conservative bishops, took to Twitter to criticize President Biden’s beliefs, calling him a “fake.”

It came after a reporter put a question to Biden last week to reply: “Catholic bishops are demanding federal taxpayers’ money not fund abortions.”

Biden responded and said, “No, not everyone does, and neither does the Pope.”

The pope has routinely compared having an abortion to “hiring a hitman.”

But Biden, who advocates legalized abortion and regularly attends mass and wears a rosary, has cited both the U.S. Catholic bishops and Pope Francis in defense of state-funded abortion, despite the bishops and pope’s consistent and vocal opposition to the practice.

“Mr. Biden must not be allowed to twist Pope Francis' words in this way. I beg the Vatican press office to make it very clear that Pope Francis is right to call abortion murder. It is time to denounce Biden's false Catholicism,

The United States Catholic Bishops’ Conference released a letter to the House and Senate last Friday specifically calling for an end to taxpayer funding for abortion services.

“Protecting taxpayers from being forced to pay for an abortion against their conscience is a principle that has historically had broad support among Americans, despite their otherwise passionately shared views on the issue. It was also life-saving,” wrote Bishop Michael Burbidge of Arlington Diocese, head of the USCCB Committee on Pro-Life Activities.

Burbidge continued in the letter, “Rather than funding abortions, Congress can better serve the common good by prioritizing actions that comprehensively assist women, children and families in need, in a way that not only promotes childbirth, but also the reception and education of women facilitates new child.’

Polls show Catholics are mixed on legal abortion.

In 2019, Pope Francis said that abortion can never be condoned, even when the fetus is seriously ill or likely to die, and urged doctors and priests to support families to carry such pregnancies to term.

At the time, Francis said at a Vatican-sponsored anti-abortion conference that opposition to abortion was not a religious issue, it was a human issue.

“Is it permissible to throw away a life to solve a problem?” he asked. “Is it legal to hire a hitman to solve a problem?”

Francis condemned abortion decisions based on prenatal testing, saying a human being is “never incompatible with life”.

Even those babies who are destined to die at birth or shortly thereafter deserve medical care in the womb, Francis said, adding that their parents need to be supported so they don’t feel isolated and anxious.

While one can argue about using medical resources in this way, it has value for parents, he said.

“Caring for these children helps the parents to grieve and see it not just as a loss, but as a step in a journey together,” Francis said.

Francis has been strongly opposed to abortion, but has also expressed compassion for women who have had them, facilitating their acquittal of the sin of abortion.
