Former Mexico Attorney General Jesús Murillo was arrested on Friday as part of the ongoing investigation into the 43 students who disappeared in Iguala, Mexico’s Guerrero state, in 2014, one of the most high-profile, debated and controversial news cases involving Mexico in recent years.

Murillo, who served as attorney general from 2012 to 2015 and led the investigation into the missing students, is accused of “enforced disappearances”, torture and obstruction of justice.

His arrest comes days after the conclusion of a government commission that called the students’ disappearance a “state crime” and involved senior officials from Mexico’s federal and state agencies. After Murillo’s arrest, a judge ordered the arrest of 83 others, including soldiers, police officers, Guerrero State officials and members of organized crime.
