The couple almost had to call off their wedding after the groom slashed his face

A couple have revealed how they almost had to call off their wedding after the groom slashed his face, needed 28 stitches and lost a tooth days before the big day – and a hurricane nearly stopped the maid of honor and flowers’ timely arrival.

Adelia Killian, 25, and her partner Connor, 29, decided to wed in September 2021 in Nantucket, Massachusetts – and arranged their ceremony in just two weeks after their relatives encouraged them to tie the knot on the upcoming family vacation .

After managing to get everything sorted out in time, the couple flew to Nantucket from Cincinnati, Ohio, in August 2021.

But the day after they arrived, Adelia had a call to say that Connor had flipped the handlebars of a bike and cut his face and knocked out a tooth. He required 28 stitches and was told he would not be able to have his tooth replaced until after the wedding.

Disaster struck again when the maid of honor’s flight was canceled due to a hurricane and the family struggled to find an alternative flight for her.

The flowers, the maid of honor – Adelia’s sister, Evelyn Symons, 29 – arrived just hours before the wedding, but despite it all, Adelia said she “wouldn’t change anything”.

Adelia, a content creator, said: “I thought we might have to cancel the wedding when I saw Connor, but he convinced me that we should go ahead anyway. He looked so exhausted and his lip was all ripped open.

“He needed stitches for the day but we took photos of one side of his face so you couldn’t see it.

“When my sister’s flight was canceled I was devastated. Luckily the hurricane ended up not being as bad as it should be and we put her on another flight.

“My flowers arrived at 6am and my wedding started at 9am so it was very tight. Everything seemed to go wrong but we got there in the end and it didn’t spoil a nice day for us.”

Adelia met Connor, a delivery driver, through a dating app in February 2020 and the two moved in together after dating for two weeks when the pandemic hit.

“We thought it was only for a few weeks,” Adelia said. “Fortunately, we understood each other and persevered.”

Connor proposed to Adelia at her local park in July 2021 and the couple began to look into planning their wedding.

“Everything was so expensive and you had to book so far in advance, so we decided to elope,” Adelia said. “We wanted to have all of our close family members there, but it was difficult to organise.

“Then they suggested that we do this in two weeks time on a holiday that was already booked. It seemed crazy, but we went for it.’

Adelia managed to book the venue, order flowers, buy a dress, book a photographer and arrange all the details in just two weeks before they flew in late August 2021 – just a week before their wedding date.

“I had my dress shipped overnight the day we left for vacation,” she said. “Fortunately, it fit and didn’t need to be changed.

“My sister said to me, ‘Something always goes wrong’, right before I left, but I thought we had everything sorted out so we were okay.”

Connor decided to go for a bike ride with his groomsmen the next day and Adelia went shopping.

“I got a call that he fell and cut his lip but was fine,” Adelia said. “Then they told me he lost his tooth. I rushed to the hospital just wanting to know he was okay.

“He had a face mask on first and when he took it off he looked so done. His lip was cut so he couldn’t drink. He just laughed and said, “Hey honey, I look like Stu from The Hangover.”

Connor needed 28 stitches and was told they would have to wait until the stitches were removed to have a new tooth put in.

“I thought it was all too traumatic and that we should call off the wedding, but Connor assured me that we have everything planned now,” Adelia said. “His swelling slowly went down over the week, allowing me to get over the trauma of the accident.”

“My sister called and said her flight was canceled because of a hurricane,” Adelia said. “My whole family got involved to find another way to get here. I’ve been told my flowers may also be delayed due to the hurricane.’

Miraculously, Evelyn managed to get on another flight and arrived the day before the wedding.

“It all came together in the end,” Adelia said. “It was a super hot day and it was really nice to only have 25 people there. It meant that Connor and I could enjoy the day together instead of entertaining people.

“Connor had a missing tooth and his stitches were still in place but it was fun and didn’t ruin the day. Now he has a cute little scar to remind us of that.”
