  • The woman drove into the mall via a pedestrian bridge after automatic doors leading from the garage opened for her car
  • A recent accident in the garage had destroyed a security barrier in front of the door and let her car through

A “confused” driver made a turn through the upper level of a mall outside of Boston on Thursday, police said.

The strange incident took place at Braintree’s South Shore Plaza shopping mall, where footage and photos showed a white Ford SUV parked on a carpeted embankment, with a strip of shops on one side and a drop to the ground below on the other .

Shoppers stared in disbelief at the sight while a mall security agent leaned in the driver’s side window to speak to the lost driver.

The car was being driven by an elderly woman who managed to get the car over a pedestrian bridge connected to the mall’s south parking garage, the Braintree Fire Department told CBS Boston.

Authorities said automatic doors leading to the bridge opened when the woman approached them in her car. A recent accident had destroyed a security barrier out front, leaving the entrance open to willing cars.

Police said the woman “pushed through the doors very slowly, turned left and parked in front of a retail store”.

She made it about 60 meters into the mall, police said, and while no one was hurt, there were a number of “scared shoppers”.

Bystanders spoke to the woman as she sat in her parked car when authorities arrived, and she met with a psychiatrist before exiting the mall. She was then taken to a hospital for an examination.

Photos showed the driver sitting on a bench and speaking to police officers after the incident.

No charges were filed against the woman, but a driver’s license suspension was filed with the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles, CBS reported.

The woman’s car suffered some scrapes while driving and police said the barrier in front of the door would be replaced “as soon as possible”.

The footage sparked predictable reactions on social media. Twitter user Kristen Brown quipped, “Only in Boston!”
