The Bolsonaro Lula duel electrifies Brazil

STORY – The official presidential campaign on October 2 began in a “holy war” climate.

Rio de Janeiro

“We are dealing with a mentally unbalanced person.” During the first major public gathering of his campaign on Thursday night, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva unleashed heavy artillery against his main rival, outgoing President Jair Bolsonaro. On a grand stage, the leftist ex-president returned to his former zeal to address a crowd of supporters gathered in a large square in Belo Horizonte, the capital of key state Minas Gerais, for the October 2 presidential election to speak of which he was he is the favorite.

The 76-year-old former trade unionist this week launched his seventh candidacy for Brazil’s presidency, which he has held twice (2003-2010). But for him it’s not a “normal” campaign this year, where ideas collide. “What is at stake today is democracy versus fascism, democracy or barbarism,” he said, voice even more hoarse than before.
