Cute and talented unicorns are now under fire after one of their songs reportedly ripped off a classic black Eyed Peas Song and could face fines in the millions. Yes, unicorns, you heard me right.
TMZ reported that toy brand Poopsie Slime Surprise created a series of videos to promote its products to children. One of these is a music video that features lyrics with the words “poop” and “glitter” in the same sentence. This video ended up being a promotional campaign to promote the products because what kind of kid doesn’t like poop content? Unfortunately, the Black Eyed Peas got wind of this and decided to take action.
The rap group argues that these unicorns ripped off the song “My Humps,” one of the group’s biggest hits. The song won a 2007 Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal and a 2006 MTV Video Music Award for Best Hip-Hop Video.
The lines “my poops, my poops, my poops, my sparkly glitter poops” were said to be similar to the 2005 hit, and the toy’s parent company, MGA Entertainment, reportedly didn’t ask the group for permission to match the tune and pacing use . The group also claimed that the unicorn singer sounded “very similar” to Fergie.
The Black Eyed Peas and BMG are now seeking $10 million in damages. So far, neither the toy company nor the Black Eyed Peas or their representatives have announced whether this would go to court. If that were the case and the toy company were forced to pay royalties, the song could become one of the most expensive poop jokes in history.
