(CNN) — Hollywood is the land of fiction, but the specter of real deaths can hover over film and television sets.

The death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, 42, after actor Alec Baldwin fired a gun on the set of the film “Rust” in New Mexico in October 2021 is just one of the tragedies that occurred during filming.

There are several instances of crew members and stuntmen being killed on film, including a stuntwoman who died in 2017 while performing on the set of Deadpool 2.

Cast members have also died in on-set accidents.

Brandon Lee

During the filming of The Raven in 1993, actor Brandon Lee, Bruce Lee’s son, was killed when he was hit by a bullet from a gun intended to have only blanks.

Actor Michael Massee, who played drug dealer Funboy in the film, shot Lee during a scene with a gun that was later found to be misloaded.

The dummy bullets had been replaced with cardboard pads, but a bullet fragment broke off and remained in the gun.

This metal tip of the dummy bullet struck Lee’s abdomen. I was 28 years old.

Brandon Lee’s family issued a statement following the death of Hutchins on the set of Rust.

“Our hearts go out to the family of Halyna Hutchins and to Joel Souza and everyone involved in the ‘Rust’ incident,” they said. No one should ever be killed with a gun on a movie set. Period.”

John Eric Hexum

Prop pistols can be deadly when fired at close range.

In 1984, actor John-Eric Hexum allegedly played with a gun on the set of Cover Up: Golden Opportunity and died after putting the gun to his head and pulling the trigger.

The brute shoved a piece of his skull into his brain and he was taken off life support a week later.

Jon-Erik Hexum rose to fame in 1982 after starring as Phineas Bogg on the NBC series Voyagers!

Victor Morrow had built a long career as an actor and director when he starred in 1982’s Twilight Zone: The Movie.

Morrow played a racist who travels back in time and is confronted with situations where he is being followed.

In a scene directed by John Landis, the actor and two child actors, Myca Dinh Le, 7, and Renee Shin-Yi Chen, 6, film a scene in which they flee a Vietnamese village during the Vietnam War while a stunt helicopter goes overhead you appear to them.

The helicopter crashed after a pyrotechnic explosion, landing on Morrow, 53, and the children, who also died.

Landis, the pilot and three others were charged with manslaughter. All were acquitted after a high-profile trial that lasted nearly nine months.
