At least 10 people were killed, including four children, and more than 20 injured when a truck crashed into a bus stop in front of a school near the Indonesian capital Jakarta on Wednesday, police said.

The driver of the truck carrying metal bars in Bekasi, West Java province, lost control of the vehicle around 10:00 a.m. local time (0300 GMT) and drove into a bus stop where school children were gathering.

“Ten people died in the accident, four children and six adults,” Jakarta Traffic Police Chief Latif Usman told AFP.

At least 23 other people, including elementary school children, were injured and taken to two nearby hospitals for treatment, he added.

Footage of the accident shows debris and bent pieces of metal at the spot where rescue workers were helping the victims.

The police have launched an investigation to determine the causes of the accident.

“At this time we have not seen any signs of brake problems, but the investigation is ongoing,” Latif Usman said.

The driver was taken into custody, but has not yet been heard because of his state of shock.

Traffic accidents are very common in the Southeast Asian country of 270 million people, where traffic laws are poorly enforced and vehicles are poorly maintained.

In April, 16 people, including a child, were killed and more than a dozen injured when a truck crashed into a cliff while descending a mountain in Papua, in the far west of the Indonesian archipelago.
