Taliban publicly flog 9 for theft, chop off men’s hands: report

The Taliban publicly flogged nine people convicted of robbery and “sodomy” at the Ahmad Shahi Stadium in Kandahar, a report said. Authorities and local residents were present during the flogging, as provincial governor spokesman Haji Zaid said the convicts were flogged 35-39 times, according to Tolo News.

“The Supreme Court said in a statement that nine people were convicted of robbery and ‘sodomy’ at Ahmad Shahi Stadium in Kandahar on Tuesday,” Tolo News reported.

Shabnam Nasimi, former political adviser to the Afghan resettlement minister and UK refugee minister, said the Taliban cut off the hands of four people at a football stadium in Kandahar.

“The Taliban reportedly cut off the hands of four people accused of theft today at a football stadium in Kandahar in front of onlookers. People are flogged, amputated and executed in Afghanistan without a fair trial and due process. This is a human rights violation,” she tweeted.

In December last year, the Taliban publicly executed a man in what appears to be the first public execution since the group seized power in August 2021 following the withdrawal of US troops.

UN experts have condemned the use of flogging as a form of punishment and called on the Taliban to end all forms of severe punishment immediately.

“We also raise doubts about the fairness of the trials that precede these punishments, which appear to fall short of basic fair trial guarantees,” experts said in a statement.
