Suspicious fire at apartment building in Gatineau

At around 4 p.m., the Gatineau fire department (SSIG) was called to intervene in a two-storey apartment building on Saint-Antoine street in the Pointe-Gatineau district.

When the first SSIG units arrived, the building was in a general state of fire. The risk of spreading to the neighboring building and the affected building behind it is very high, SSIG said in a press release on Sunday.

Remote controlled load shedding was required to bring the fire safely under control.

The fire was brought under control shortly after 10:20 p.m., with casualties estimated at $59,300.

One person was taken to hospital for treatment of serious injuries, the SSIG added.

However, according to the SPVG, his life is not in danger. The fire claimed at least four lives, including three who were being treated by the Red Cross.

The investigations have now been transferred to the SPVG.

At the time of writing, a tight perimeter was still being set up at the site so as not to disrupt the investigation.
