Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch From Mercury, the first mainline Gundam series since 2016, won’t really launch until October. But if you want to know what to expect aside from the sneak peeks we’ve already had, you’ve got a treat in store: a new prequel episode has just gone live.

The Witch From Mercury Prologue, which made its debut in Japan a few months ago, is now available to stream on Gundam Info’s official YouTube channel, the first time it has been officially made publicly available to fans outside of Japan. Set decades before the events of Witch From Mercury, the prologue introduces a new alternate timeline in the Gundam continuity—actually the 11th—called Ad Stella, and a future where mankind is slowly growing using GUND format technology colonized the stars. cybernetic and mechanical prosthetics and body modifications that help “space dwellers” adapt to non-terrestrial environments.

But when the GUND format is used to develop human-machine interfaces in mobile suits, a burgeoning corporate and guerrilla war between independent mecha development institutes and the Earthgovern’s own Development Council puts the family of young Ericht “Eri” Samaya in the crossfire her fourth birthday.

You can check out the full prologue episode above, which so far sets the stage for all sorts of classic beats you can expect from the iconic mecha franchise – earth/space colony tensions, child soldiers, political machinations, tragedies, and some very cool giant robots, including the new Gundam Lfrith, a neon pink prototype for Mercury’s eventual main suit, the Gundam Aerial. If that’s what we can expect from the main series, we’ll be delighted.

Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch From Mercury is slated to air in Japan this October, with simultaneous worldwide airing planned via a currently undisclosed platform.
