Mexico’s National Water Commission (Conagua) reported Wednesday that Tropical Storm Lisa strengthened as it made its way through the Caribbean Sea to become a Category 1 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Scale.

In a statement released at 12:00 p.m. local time, the company said Lisa is located in Quintana Roo, 60 kilometers east-southeast of Belize and 170 kilometers from Chetumal.

The meteorological phenomenon showed maximum sustained winds of 130 kilometers per hour with gusts of 155 kilometers per hour and moving west at a speed of 22 kilometers per hour.

“The National Meteorological Service (SMN) of the National Water Commission, in coordination with the National Hurricane Center of Miami, United States of America, maintains a hurricane impact prevention zone from Chetumal to the Port of Costa Maya,” the With Water said.

Likewise, the tropical storm impact prevention zone extends from Puerto Costa Maya to Puerto Allen in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo.

Conagua predicts Lisa will transit through Belize and reach Guatemala in the next few hours while arriving in southeastern Mexico on Thursday, causing rain in Campeche, Quintana Roo, Yucatan, Chiapas and Tabasco.

In this sense, the authorities warned of the possible occurrence of landslides and increased levels in rivers and streams that can cause flooding.

He also called on the population to take precautionary measures in strong winds and waves in coastal areas and to follow the advice of civil protection.
