Storm in Quebec: Schools criticized for staying open

The South Coast School Service Center closed all of its schools for the day. The students of the navigator’s CSS were already on educational leave, but the management also decided to cancel the planned activities in their vocational training centers and adult education.

Notre-Dame Juniorate, Marcelle Mallet School, Saint-Coeur-de-Marie Day School, Saint-François Seminary, François De Laval College, Champigny College, Oralist School, School of the Ursulines, the Saint-Joseph Institute and the Saint-Louis Academy suspend their activities for the day.

The Garneau, Sainte-Foy, Limoilou and Lévis Cegeps also suspended their courses on this snowy Friday.

The University of Quebec at Rimouski (UQAR) Lévis Campus is doing the same. By e-mail, she points out that the distance learning courses will be maintained. Services remain open and teleworking is permitted for all employees whose role does not require an on-campus presence.

The Lévis paratransit service is suspended for the day except for those who need to travel for dialysis.

Criticized openings

The Center de services scolaire de la Capitale, the Center de services scolaire des Découvreurs and the Central Quebec school board have decided not to close their doors.

The decision may not reflect your reality. If you think the situation is unsafe for your child in your area, you can keep them at home for the day, the Center de services scolaire de la Capitale announced on social networks on Friday. A release that drew hundreds of angry reactions.

Very snowy roads, zero visibility, really not nice on the road, and our schools are open, where’s the logic? asks a user.

Annie April has decided not to send her two children to school.

I find it absurd that private schools and certain CEGEPs close for the day while those in the capital remain open, she denounces.

The extremely rare Center des services scolaire des Découvreurs later apologized for not closing its doors.

Like many other institutions in the region, we were surprised by the speed and intensity of the current storm. It goes without saying that this situation would have required a cessation of our activities and for this we would like to apologize to you, writes the Director General of the School Service Center, Christian Pleau.
