When a coach or team manager is asked about a player who is signed by another team, the safest answer is, “We can’t talk about players who are signed by another team.”

Via the Dallas Morning News’ Michael Gehlken, Cowboys manager Stephen Jones didn’t stay in that safe haven when asked about a potential interest in 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel during an appearance at 105.3 The Fan in Dallas.

We always want to get better‘ Jones said. “Obviously you’re keeping tabs on everything that’s going on. Of course everything has to fit and work, but we always look where we . . . can get better.”

That’s hardly a sign that the Cowboys will make the move. Aside from the design capital it would take to get Samuel, he has to be paid. A lot. The cowboy recently cut Amari Cooper’s $20 million salary. Could they afford Samuel, especially with CeeDee Lamb a season away from a major upgrade in his own contract?

It’s doubtful. But we’ll see if the Cowboys try to make a move for Samuel.

Other factors include whether the 49ers would even sell him, whether they would sell him to the Cowboys, and whether Samuel wants to be sold to the Cowboys. Earlier this week, he liked (before unliking) a tweet that included a picture of Samuel in a Dallas uniform.
