MIAMI — Former Denver Broncos head coach Vic Fangio has reached an agreement with the Miami Dolphins to become the team’s defensive coordinator, a source confirmed to ESPN.

Fangio, 64, was sidelined this season after Denver fired him last January.

Fangio was 19-30 in three seasons as the Broncos coach after being hired in 2019. In Miami, he will be reunited with outside linebacker Bradley Chubb, whom he coached in Denver and who was traded to the Dolphins last season.

NFL Network first reported that Fangio and the Dolphins had reached an agreement.

Fangio’s defense has finished in the top 10 eight times, most recently with the Chicago Bears in 2018 (No. 3). The Broncos finished eighth overall in 2019, his final season as head coach. He has 19 seasons of experience as a defensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers, Indianapolis Colts, Houston Texans, San Francisco 49ers and Bears.

The Dolphins fired defensive coordinator Josh Boyer earlier this month. When Mike McDaniel was hired as the Dolphins’ head coach last year, he kept Boyer as his defensive coordinator.

Miami possessed the fourth-best running defense in the league in 2022, but also ranked 21st in expected defensive extra points, 22nd in sacks per pass attempt, and 24th in points allowed per game and third-last percentage . A defense that ranked in the top 10 takeaways in each of the previous two seasons struggled to generate turnovers last season and finished with just 14 takeaways — tied on points with the second-lowest in the NFL.

Fangio joins a defense that features several Pro Bowl caliber players, including former All-Pro cornerback Xavien Howard and alternates Jevon Holland, Christian Wilkins and Chubb.

He is now the third coach on McDaniel’s staff with head coaching experience, joining quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator Darrell Bevell and tight ends/assistant head coach Jon Embree.

NFL Conference Championship Injuries 49ers Elijah Mitchell out with groin

NFL Conference Championship Injuries: 49ers’ Elijah Mitchell out with groin injury; Bengals lost two more OL

We’ve finally set our Final Four for the 2022 NFL season, and now it’s time to decide which teams will play in Super Bowl LVII. The San Francisco 49ers, Philadelphia Eagles, Cincinnati Bengals and Kansas City Chiefs enter week 21 of the season and all four teams are struggling with injuries.

Below we will break down the injury updates for Conference Championship Sunday. Who’s in? Who is outside? Who is trending in the right direction? This is your one stop shop for all things injury related in the NFL.

All NFL odds via Caesars Sportsbook.

San Francisco 49ers at Philadelphia Eagles (-2.5)

  • Eagle: QB Ian Book, CB Josiah Scott, RB Trey Sermon, S Anthony Harris, LB Kyron Johnson, G Josh Sills INACTIVE
  • 49ers: QB Jimmy Garoppolo (foot), RB Elijah Mitchell (groin), CB Ambry Thomas, OL Nick Zakelj, TE Ross Dwelley, RB Tyrion Davis-Price, DL Drake Jackson INACTIVE

The Eagles had a brief injury report this week. Right tackle Lane Johnson (groin) and cornerback Avonte Maddox (toe) were limited Wednesday and Thursday but trained fully on Friday. Neither player has an injury designation. Linebacker TJ Edwards was added to Friday’s injury report with an ankle injury that limited him in practice, but he also has no injury designation.

The 49ers had a fuller injury report this week as running back Christian McCaffrey (calf), running back Elijah Mitchell (groin) and quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo (foot) all missed the team’s first two practice sessions. McCaffrey will play after fully training on Friday and doesn’t have an injury designation, but Garoppolo stays out and Mitchell will also miss the game. None of the players trained on Friday either. The only other 49er with an injury designation is cornerback Ambry Thomas, who was sidelined all week with an ankle problem.

Cincinnati Bengals at Kansas City Chiefs (-1.5)

  • bosses: TE Travis Kelce (back), WR Justin Watson (illness), WR Mecole Hardman (pelvis) QUESTIONABLE
  • Bengal: G Alex Cappa (ankle), T Jonah Williams (knee) OUT

Everyone had their eyes on Chiefs star quarterback Patrick Mahomes this week after he sprained his ankle in Saturday’s win over the Jacksonville Jaguars. Despite that injury, head coach Andy Reid told reporters on Friday that Mahomes will start on Sunday, noting that “he’s moving well”. Mahomes has been a full participant in practice all week, as has running back Jerick McKinnon (ankle) and linebacker Willie Gay Jr. (toe). With Mahomes in attendance, the Chiefs’ biggest injury concern is Travis Kelce. The first-team All-Pro was included on Friday’s injury report with a back injury. Despite intensive training, Kelce is ruled doubtful for Sunday’s game. Wide receivers Mecole Hardman (pelvis) and Justin Watson (illness) are also questionable.

Meanwhile, the Bengals added Hayden Hurst to the team’s injury report before Sunday’s AFC title game is fought back against the Chiefs. Hurst, who was not on Wednesday’s injury report, was hampered in Thursday’s practice with a calf injury. On Friday, Hurst stated that he will be on the field when the Bengals meet Kansas City on Sunday. Not all injury news was good for Cincinnati, as starting offensive linemen Alex Cappa (ankle) and Jonah Williams (knee) were both ruled out for the second straight game. Cappa has been out since injuring his ankle in Week 18 against the Ravens, while Williams missed last week’s game after dislocating a kneecap in the Bengals’ playoff win over Baltimore. Jackson Carman and Max Scharping are expected to replace both players in the starting XI again.

The Quebecer was 20th in the early splits as he began his climb to the front of the group. Eighth after the seven-kilometer mark, he held his own in these waters to the finish.

Lakers LeBron James stunned after failing to get game changing whistle

Lakers, LeBron James stunned after failing to get game-changing whistle against Celtics; Referees admit call blown

The Los Angeles Lakers are not getting along with NBA officials this season. Los Angeles ranks third in the league for field goal attempts in the restricted area, but only 19th for free throw attempts per minute. For some reason, the offensive that scores more points than everyone else doesn’t seem to get calls at the end of games. And against the Celtics on Saturday night in Boston, the situation hit a new low.

With four seconds remaining, Jaylen Brown made a layup that reduced the Lakers’ lead to one. OK no problem. That still left the Lakers with the ball and the lead… right? Not correct. Seemingly out of nowhere, Patrick Beverley was called out for one of the latest fouls you’ll ever see.

Just look:

Brown made the free throw. The Lakers called a timeout. They designed a play for James to attack the rim. He goes into the suit and lays down. Jayson Tatum clearly smacks him in the arm. Again no whistle. And just like their Jan. 12 double overtime loss to the Mavericks — the game in which Troy Brown Jr. was seemingly fouled but didn’t get a whistle on a 3-point try that won the game — it’s once again the Lakers def. due to bad missed call.

After the game, team boss Eric Lewis admitted to the pool reporter that a mistake had been made on the last possession. “There was contact” he said. “Back then, during the game, we didn’t see a foul. The team missed the game.” However, neither James nor Beverley handled the bad calls particularly well. James melted in a way that almost resembled his infamous reaction when JR Smith forgot the score at the end of Game 1 of the 2018 NBA Finals.

Beverly was more proactive. Between the fourth quarter and overtime, he kind of got his hands on a camera and maybe tried to show it to Lewis. He was immediately called for a technical foul and Tatum hit the free throw before overtime began.

The Lakers were predictably furious after the game. “The best player in the world cannot be called. It’s incredible,” said coach Darvin Ham said. Anthony Davis wasn’t even that diplomatic. “That’s bullshit,” Davis said. “This is unacceptable. … We were betrayed tonight.” James himself was confused.

“I don’t get it,” James said. “I’m attacking the color like any other guy in this league who’s shooting double-digit free throws a night. I do not get it. I do not understand.”

The Lakers are now 23-27 and sit 13th in the Western Conference. The 28-24 Los Angeles Clippers currently hold the No. 4 seed but are just four games ahead of them overall. Every win and loss in the standings is crucial in such a crowded playoff race. If that parity holds, a call that the NBA immediately admitted was wrong could mean the difference between the Lakers missing the playoffs, the play-in, or the postseason altogether. It’s not hard to see why they’re so upset. From their perspective, a pattern of poor administration has followed them throughout the season and if the Celtics game was any indication, they might be right.

NFC Divisional Playoffs – Dallas Cowboys vs. San Francisco 49ers

The 49ers won’t run their No. 2 back for Sunday’s NFC Championship game.

Elijah Mitchell is inactive with a groin injury.

Mitchell was ruled questionable after not training all week. Mitchell had 14 carries for 51 yards in the win over Dallas last week. He also caught a touchdown pass in the wildcard win over Seattle.

But San Francisco has plenty of running back opportunities, starting with Christian McCaffrey. While he didn’t practice on Wednesday or Thursday, on Friday he was a full participant and had no injury status for the game.

Deebo Samuel is also likely to see work outside of the backfield. Jordan Mason is also an option for running back, as is Tevin Coleman, who was lifted from the practice team and is active.

Cornerback Amber Thomas (ankle) is also inactive after being questionable for the game.

On the other hand, cornerback Avonte Maddox is officially back from his toe injury. He had no injury status on Friday. The Eagles did not have a game-status player in their 53-man roster.

The 49ers have inactive quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, defensive end Drake Jackson, offensive lineman Nick Zakelj, running back Ty Davis-Price and tight end Ross Dwelley.

The Eagles’ inactives are quarterback Ian Book, cornerback Josiah Scott, running back Trey Sermon, safety Anthony Harris, linebacker Kyron Johnson, and offense lineman Josh Sills.
