Chargers Austin Ekeler sees trade as extension talks progress

Chargers’ Austin Ekeler sees trade as extension talks progress – ESPN

What is the market for Austin Ekeler?

Adam Schefter explains what a potential trade for Chargers’ Austin Ekeler would entail.

COSTA MESA, Calif. — Los Angeles Chargers running back Austin Ekeler is requesting permission to speak with other teams about a potential trade after preliminary talks with the team aimed at a contract extension failed to progress, his agent Cameron Weiss told Adam ESPN’s boss.

Ekeler, 27, is entering the final season of a four-year, $24.5 million contract and is expected to earn $6.25 million.

Last season, Ekeler played a key role in helping the Chargers earn their first playoff spot in four seasons before being eliminated in a 31-30 wildcard playoff loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Ekeler led the NFL with 18 touchdowns while rushing for 915 yards on 204 carries and catching 107 passes for 722 yards. Ekeler, a common target outside the backfield, also led the NFL with 822 yards from the catch.

The Chargers entered the offseason $20.5 million over the 2023 salary cap, but freed up $40.37 million in space to meet the salary cap by reducing the contracts of recipients Keenan Allen and Mike Williams as well as edge rushers Joey Bosa and Khalil Mack restructured.

They’re on the clock to sign Justin Herbert for a record-breaking overtime as the quarterback prepares for the fourth season of a five-year rookie deal.

The Chargers signed Ekeler as an undrafted free agent from Western State Colorado in 2017. He landed a starting role in 2019, signed his final contract as a restricted free agent after the 2020 season, and has since anchored a running back corps that has struggled to produce behind him.

In six seasons, Ekeler has rushed for 3,727 yards and 34 touchdowns and caught 389 passes for 3,448 yards.

Ekeler and Hall of Famer Lenny Moore are the only players in NFL history to have 25 rushing touchdowns and 25 receiving touchdowns in their first six NFL seasons.

Since joining the NFL in 2017, Ekeler has ranked 11th among active players with a total of 7,175 scrimmage yards.

Running backs Joshua Kelley, Isaiah Spiller and Larry Rountree III remain in the roster.

Cale Makar: ‘A talent we may not see again for the next 50 years’

Colorado Avalanche defenseman Cale Makar leaves no one indifferent, be they fans, coaches or players. Quebecer Jonathan Drouin is part of this lot.

The Montreal Canadiens forward was very happy with what he will face on Monday night.

“For me it is a [Connor] McDavid in defense is a talent we may not see for the next 50 years, Drouin said Monday after the team’s morning training session at the Bell Centre. The way he skates maybe encourages young people to play a little bit of defense when they are 7 or 8 years old. It will open the door for many defenders.

“You can’t learn the way he skates. You were born with it. […] Everyone talks about his attack, but defensively, with his skate, even if you beat him and you’re happy with your move, he’s still there. He showed that in the playoffs last year. It’s impressive to see.”

Makar may be “only” 10th in the National League and has 52 points in 51 games as a defender, but his 52 points in 51 games puts him third in the points per game category behind Erik Karlsson and Rasmus Dahlin.

The Avalanche defender has missed 13 games for his team this season.

Falcons Make Chris Lindstrom the NFLs Highest Paid Guard ESPN

Falcons Make Chris Lindstrom the NFL’s Highest-Paid Guard – ESPN

Michael RothsteinESPN Staff Writer12:11 PM ET2 Minute Read

The Atlanta Falcons are extending Pro Bowl right guard Chris Lindstrom by five years, the franchise announced Monday.

The deal is for five years and $105 million, sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Jeremy Fowler, making him the NFL’s highest-paid guard and he will now keep him at the club through the 2028 season.

His $21 million annual average surpasses Indianapolis Colts guard Quenton Nelson’s $20.2 million annual average as the highest for a guard in NFL history. Only Lindstrom and Nelson’s AAV exceeded $20 million.

Lindstrom, 26, was Atlanta’s 2019 first-round draft pick from Boston College and one of several family members who would go on to play in the NFL, including his father Chris.

After starting five games in his rookie year, he’s been in the lineup in every game for the Falcons for the past three seasons, a mainstay on Atlanta’s offensive line. Lindstrom is a clear technician, having been called up for a holding penalty in his four-year career – and that came in 2022.

“Chris is such a tech and there’s a lot of stuff in there about hand placement and where it’s — this, you’re out in space or whatever the optics of it are, but Chris is doing a good job,” the Falcons head coach said Arthur Smith in January. “He works really hard at his craft; he has fast hands and you can see how he hits. He plays right and his hands are usually in.”

According to ESPN Stats & Information research, Lindstrom had a 92.7 pass block win rate and a 73% run block win rate last season.

By extending Lindstrom, Atlanta is suspending two of its core offensive line assets – left tackle Jake Matthews and Lindstrom – until possibly 2026.

Lindstrom said after the season he wanted to stay in Atlanta — he’s entering his fifth option year — and that he hoped the franchise and its agents could make something happen.

“I want to be here,” Lindstrom said in January. “I want to be a hawk throughout my career.”

Ex-referee denounces pressure from Real Madrid president: "He wanted to put me in the room"

Ex referee denounces pressure from Real Madrid president quotHe wanted to

Burn LaLiga! Spanish football is facing one of its most difficult moments. Amid the corruption allegations against Barcelona, this time the controversy rests on the real Madrid after a serious complaint. The Spanish ex-referee Edward Iturralde Gonzales confessed that Florentino Perez, The boss of the merengue club tried to put pressure on him in the 2010-2011 season and even wanted to put him in a room.

The veteran ex-referee made those statements after a report published by Real Madrid TV, which pointed out a series of mistakes made by referee Clos Gómez, who is in charge of VAR in Spanish football.

“That’s the way this television (Real Madrid TV) operates. Since they are journalists, who will call me to a separate room? examine it. So you can see them trying to put pressure on certain people. The game ends when we beat Deportivo 6-1, we leave the field and the assistants come out with me. There’s a person who wanted to put me in a room by myself and told me, ‘I’m just asking you to whistle at me the same way Barcelona did,'” he began his story about the show “Carrusel deportivo” on Cadena SER.

Given what happened, the former judge was surprised and thought it was a joke. However, seeing the manager’s actions, he decided to enter the room with his assistants and “after half an hour the Technical Committee of Referees (CTA) already knew.”

Iturralde continued his narrative defending the performance of his colleagues, noting that his statements against the White House chief have been recorded in a report.

“It hasn’t happened to me more often, no president has put me in a separate room. I take care of the facts (…). The one who put me in a separate room along with my two assistants was Florentino Pérez. I don’t have to hide. There’s a report from the CTA because I put them in the know so they can see what to press. There’s no corrupt referee, we’re above those people,” he concluded.

When will Real Madrid play again?

Real Madrid have to play the revenge from the round of 16 of the Champions League against Liverpool. The teams led by Carlo Ancelotti come from the first leg 5-2 and meet Klopp’s men again on Wednesday 13 March from 15:00 (Peruvian time) at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium.

Detroit Lions Free Agency Moves Team Offers 5 Player ERFA

Detroit Lions Free Agency Moves: Team Offers 5 Player ERFA Offer – Pride Of Detroit

On Monday, the Detroit Lions announced they have advertised five of their exclusive 2023 free agents.

An exclusive rights free agent is a player who has been in the NFL for less than three years and has an expiring contract. Since ERFAs are not veterans, teams retain their contractual rights and have the option to offer them a one-year contract, usually for the league’s minimum amount.

Unfortunately for players, once advertised, they have few options in front of them. First, they can sign their advertised contract and be back on an NFL roster, which is the option almost everyone chooses. Second, if they don’t want to sign their offer, they can ask for their release, which the team may or may not agree to. Finally, if the player refuses to sign and the team refuses to withdraw the tender, the player would be forced to sit out the upcoming season – which is why most have opted for the first option.

Simply put, expect all of the players listed below to sign their tender and become part of the Lions’ 90-man offseason roster.

TE Brock Wright – After the team traded away TJ Hockenson, Wright took over front tight end duties for the remainder of the season. Wright played well in the new role — including a game-winning touchdown against the Jets — but will likely face competition for the starting role in 2023.

TE Shane Zylstra – Zylstra stepped into the Lions’ TE3 role after the Hockenson trade, eventually sharing time with rookie James Mitchell as the rotating TE2. The highlight of Zylstra’s season was a three-touchdown performance against the Panthers in Week 16. He will be in contention for a roster spot in 2023.

NT Benito Jones – Claimed on cuts, Jones saw his role grow as the season progressed and ended up getting regular rotation snaps and contributing weekly. Jones primarily filled the reserve nose tackle role last season, and his upcoming role could be determined by the other defenders who have acquired this offseason.

LB Anthony Pittman – We first learned of Pittman’s offer through the Free Press’s Dave Birkett on Wednesday, which was an expected move considering Pittman’s worth, especially with specialty teams. In 2021, Pittman saw over 400 special team snaps for Detroit (which led the team) and in 2022 he was just one behind the team lead with 358 special team snaps. Pittman’s contributions should put him in a good position for 2023, but he may need to show more on defense.

LS Scott Daly – After taking charge of Lions legend Don Muhlbach in 2021, Daly has been the team’s main long snapper for the past two seasons. Last year Daly had no competition for his role in training camp and it is unclear if he will face a challenger in this training camp or if he will continue to play unchallenged.

Remarkable:

The Lions had two other ERFA options that were undisclosed with this group: running back Craig Reynolds and IOL Tommy Kraemer.

The Lions announced that Reynolds has been re-signed, but it’s not clear if he simply signed his offer or received an entirely new contract. In any case, he’s back in the squad.

As for Kraemer, he had a back injury that cost him all of last season and it’s possible that an injury is preventing him from being called out, or it’s also possible that the team decided to continue. There is currently no clarity on this situation.
