Trade Evaluation: The Falcons pick up Jonnu Smith from the Patriots for the Day 3 draft pick – The Athletic

The Patriots and Falcons settled some deals Monday morning ahead of the start of the legal manipulation window when the Falcons agreed to acquire tight end Jonnu Smith for a seventh-round draft pick, according to a league official with knowledge of the transaction.

Why they made the move

The Patriots had been secretly hoping to get out of the last half of Smith’s four-year, $50 million contract, but it seemed impractical to let him go due to cap restrictions, which were a by-product of last year’s restructuring. However, the trade reduced the cap space by $4.4 million while the Patriots absorbed $12.8 million in dead money. It wasn’t ideal, but that was about the best it would get.

The Falcons have reunited Smith, 27, with head coach Arthur Smith as the pair were together during Jonnu Smith’s prime seasons with the Titans of 2017-20. While Smith struggled to muster consistent stat production with the Patriots, he was still a worthy blocker and he should help the Falcons open up other opportunities for rising star Kyle Pitts.

Commercial quality (Falcons): B-plus

The Falcons will restructure Smith’s contract, which has two years and $22.8 million left. Pending the final financial details, this grade could approach the A category.

The market for experienced tight ends is thin, and Smith likely offers the Falcons more upside than their other options. Smith caught 114 passes for 1,302 yards and 16 touchdowns in four seasons with Arthur Smith and the Titans; Their last two seasons together were far more productive than Smith’s time in New England.

And again, if Smith becomes more of a stepping stone for Pitts, that’s an even bigger win.

Trade Grade (Patriots): B-minus

Smith’s move seemed highly unlikely, so the Patriots get high marks for that element of the transaction. We’ll see what happens with the draft pick, but the $4.4 million in cap relief was an unexpected win.

Still, it doesn’t overshadow the Patriots’ touch at the signing, given that they never got it working with the catch-and-run designs that were in the plans — and that Smith did so well in Tennessee. Smith had 55 total catches for 539 yards and a touchdown in 30 games with the Patriots.

Smith featured heavily on offense in his first offseason with the Patriots, but injuries and inconsistencies slowed progress, and he never got on as quickly as the Patriots intended during their 2021 offseason spending bonanza.

Changes to video playback in the NHL?

The General Managers of the National Hockey League (NHL) hold their annual meetings Monday and Tuesday in Boca Raton, Fla., and among the topics discussed on the first day of discussions were reasons that could result in a resumption video .

As reported by TVA Sports journalist Renaud Lavoie, the GMs have raised the possibility of allowing Bettman Circuit head coaches to request a review in two specific cases: a stick in a player’s face and pucks caught in the stands removed from the defense zone.

For now, referees must rely on their judgment and vision of the game that took place moments before to determine a sanction. Often the more problematic sequences are the subject of confabulation between the officials and the linesmen on the ice. Recovery is more likely to be used to validate or cancel a target.

Attendees at these meetings could make recommendations, regardless of the topic at hand, during their interviews, all of which may be announced Tuesday or Wednesday, according to the website NHL.com.

“These meeting days are always an opportunity to evaluate our sport and our product on the ice in a detailed and energetic manner,” said Bill Daly, assistant commissioner of the NHL. GMs experience hockey day and night for an extended period of nine months. They have the pulse of what works in hockey and what can be improved. And their feedback is critical, if not essential, to the decisions we make in the league.”

2023 March Madness TV Guide Announcers: How to Watch NCAA Tournaments, Tip Times, TV Channels, Clip – CBS Sports

Are you ready for the madness that will take place during the 2023 NCAA tournament? You are better. March Madness is about to kick off, with this week’s First Four games taking center stage on Tuesday and Wednesday in Dayton, Ohio. The NCAA tournament begins with 68 teams all competing to become the 2022-23 national champion. There will be a number of notable voices on the call to this year’s March Madness celebration, along with some new names in visible roles.

This NCAA tournament is the last for an icon in the TV coverage of the event. Leading play-by-play announcer Jim Nantz will step down from his role as a college basketball player after calling his 32nd Final Four. Nantz will stay with CBS to cover golf and the NFL, but he will hand over his role in college basketball to Ian Eagle, who will be the play-by-play voice of the Final Four beginning in 2024.

A few new names in prominent positions include longtime NBA coach and current TNT television analyst Stan Van Gundy, who will serve as game action analyst, and former Villanova coach Jay Wright, who will step in as studio analyst for the first time. Those who have watched CBS’ college basketball coverage during the regular season have already caught Wright in his new role, but this will be his first big dance in the studio since his 21-year run with the Wildcats, which yielded two national titles.

Brackets are here! Come back to your pools and join ours Challenges for men and women for a chance to win a new SUV and college basketball dream trip!

Let’s take a look at the March Madness 2023 announcement teams as well as the full 2023 NCAA tournament schedule.

49ers No chance of Jimmy G coming back

NFL: “Jimmy G” is leaving the 49ers

Knowing his future lay elsewhere now, quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo agreed to a three-year contract with the Las Vegas Raiders.

According to the NFL Network on Monday, the 31-year-old will be paid $67.5 million, including a $34 million guaranteed total. The marriage between the two parties will be official on Wednesday, at the start of the NFL’s new year.

Garoppolo has played the last six seasons with the San Francisco 49ers, which will give Trey Lance and Brock Purdy a chance to compete for the No. 1 center position at next training camp. After leading Team California to a Super Bowl LIV appearance, “Jimmy G” struggled with medical problems in 2022 as a foot injury sustained in December ruined the remainder of his year.

The former New England Patriots completed 67.2% of his passes for 2,437 yards, 16 touchdowns and four interceptions. Despite his absence, the Niners advanced to the National Conference Finals.

For their part, the Raiders have ended their association with quarterback Derek Carr, who will continue his career with the New Orleans Saints.

Who are the promises of Cristal who made his debut

Who are the promises of Cristal, who made his debut in the magnificent game 4-4 against Deportivo Garcilaso?

Sporting Cristal played in a great game against Deportivo Garcilaso on day 8 of the Liga 1 Apertura tournament last Sunday, March 12th, in which they missed three important points against the league leaders. Despite the four goals they scored, the Sky Blues couldn’t defend their victory and ended up splitting, causing madness among the locals. Although the sting of the tie lingers, it’s not all bad news for Rímac as four promising players made their senior debuts.

Taking advantage of the Rimense club’s minors, Tiago Nunes lined up these players to rest his team’s starters, thinking of the clash against Huracán for the Copa Libertadores. The Brazilian commanded a reserve team that included three 20-year-old players and a 17-year-old player making their first division debuts.

We’re talking about Flavio Gabriel Alcedo Gutiérrez, Gilmar Alonso Paredes Esquives, Alejandro Jesús Pósito Olazábal and Diego Otoya.

The four Cristal promises that debuted with Sporting Cristal

Flavio Alcedo He was the only rookie to start in the game against Deportivo Garcilaso. The 20-year-old defender was making his debut as a professional and was joined by Rafael Lutiger at the back. He was part of the Peru U20 team that played in the Sudamericano and came on as a substitute in stage two of the Copa Libertadores.

The last two went into the duel between Cristal and Garcilaso Alejandro Posito (17) j Diego Otoya (18), replacing Alcedo and Ugarriza respectively. Both had a few minutes to show themselves, but made it into the professional team for the first time in their careers.

NFL Free Agency 2023: 49ers sign Javon Hargrave to four-year, $84 million deal – CBS Sports

The San Francisco 49ers make one of the biggest moves of the early wave of free choice. CBS Sports NFL insider Jonathan Jones The Niners are reportedly signing former Philadelphia Eagles defenseman Javon Hargrave to a four-year, $84 million deal. The deal includes $40 million in guaranteed money, via ESPN.

Hargrave, who turned 30 in February, is having arguably the best season of his career after ending 2022 with 11 sacks, 10 tackles for loss and 16 quarterback hits from his defensive inside position. He was one of the lynchpins of the Eagles frontline, leading the NFL in sacks and helping spur the team on its quest to the Super Bowl.

Hargrave, who was originally selected in the third round by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2016, signed a three-year, $39 million deal with Philadelphia in 2020.

Hargrave joins a San Francisco defensive line that is also among the best in football. He will settle on the inside alongside Arik Armstead and Javon Kinlaw (assuming both stay on for the upcoming season) and help Nick Bosa finish off the opposing quarterback.

The Niners lost defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans to the Houston Texans earlier this offseason, but brought in former interim Carolina Panthers head coach Steve Wilks to lead the defense. He now works alongside another talented player at the helm, joining a unit that also includes Fred Warner, Dre Greenlaw, Charvarius Ward, Talanoa Hufanga and more. The Niners should once again have one of the best defenses in the league in 2023, which should help keep the team competitive whether Trey Lance or Brock Purdy are the center of offense.

A player worse than Happy Gilmore

A player worse than Happy Gilmore

Adam Sandler goes from bad hockey player to good golfer in the Happy Gilmore thread. But there’s worse, a terrible golfer on the PGA’s toughest course, TPC Sawgrass.

• Also read: Players Championship: The 17th hole is a spectacular and electrifying course

It was last weekend’s Players Championship at the famous Florida golf course that inspired us to revisit one of the most memorable rounds of the legendary course.

In 1986, Golf Digest magazine, or rather publisher Peter Andrews, had a brilliant idea. He offers to find the worst golfers in the United States to confront at TPC Sawgrass.

“We said we’d do it. But we wanted to find the worst golfers who are addicted, not just someone who plays every now and then. We looked for players who play at least 25 rounds a year,” Bob Carney told The Golf Channel in 2011.

A disaster

Four players find themselves on the field in a setting as formal as if they were professionals.

“It was a classic day for such bad players. Talking to them before the first tee I realized we were dealing with serious players, even if they weren’t very good,” recalled Deane Beman, who was PGA commissioner from 1974 to 1994.

Among the four golfers is Angelo Spagnolo, a 31-year-old grocery store executive from the Pittsburgh area.

With his shortened swing and clumsy footwork, every hole is an adventure for him. After 16 holes he has already collected 106 strokes over par for the course.

It has to be said that the round of four offers stunning numbers. Neither of them managed to complete a hole on par. They also came up with 124 penalty strokes.

hell

Those familiar with TPC Sawgrass know what’s coming. The 17th hole. It is a par 3 where players face a peninsula about 135 yards from the tee.

This is where hell really begins for Angelo Spagnolo. 25 years later he tells the Golf Channel about his experiences.

“When I came up on the tee and looked down at the water separating me from the hole, it looked like the English Channel to me.”

He takes off for the first time. His ball flies a few meters and falls into the water. His second shot landed to the left, facing the hole but still on the other side of the water, near a Japanese cameraman. The surface is pebbly and contains shells.

He sends his ball further into the water. His youngest son boos him and the organization goes through his shopping cart to suggest that he walk around the hole with small punches to get onto the path leading to the island, which he refuses.

After more than half an hour of relentlessness, he finally decides to circumnavigate the body of water to reach the bridge that leads to the green, not without sending a baseball ball off the path into the water. He then needs three shots to squeeze his ball into the cup.

Spagnolo finishes the 17th hole with an astronomical 66 and finishes his round with a total of 257.

Repetition

Fast forward to 2011. The Golf Channel decides to contact Spagnolo to offer him a chance to try his luck on the 17th hole again.

“I want to erase 25 years of frustration,” says Spagnolo with a grin.

His swing isn’t better, he’s got a few extra pounds, but he still has that genuine love of golf and a good nature that honors him.

In 1988, Spagnolo hit the green 17 times, but his flat shots ended in a shot in the water. He also had 63 shots to reach the green.

In 2011, his first two shots landed in the water and the third landed behind the hole. From there, it would eventually take him 30 more shots to reach the green and three putts to finish on 44 overall.

After 25 years, he will cut his historic record by 22 shots.

Comparison with the professionals

If he ever tries his luck again, Spagnolo will have to play the 17th hole thirty shots down to keep up with the worst pro players.

Robert Gomez in 1990 and Bob Tway in 2005 tied with a score of 12.

And if we look at what happened this year, the 17th wasn’t as gravedigging as usual. According to statistics from last weekend’s Players Championship, five more holes caused more problems for the players.

There, 45 bogeys and 29 double bogeys were recorded. 58 balls landed in the water and players averaged a 3.13 on this par 3.

On the plus side, there were 79 birdies and three holes-in-one, just like the Players’ Championships played at Sawgrass between 2000 and 2016.

Angelo Spagnolo certainly does not belong to the elite, but he has achieved one thing in this place that no other professional can ever achieve. In 1986, Commissioner Beman jokingly renamed the bridge at the 17th hole Spagnolo’s Alley, a name that still stands today. In doing so, he left his mark on the legend in more ways than one.
