Split in two: Ukraine warns of ‘Korea scenario’ – Ukraine

The Ukrainian secret service warns of a dichotomy. There is a risk of a split based on the Korean model, which would result in guerrilla warfare.

More than a month has passed since the start of Russia’s brutal war of aggression in neighboring Ukraine, but the exact motives and goals of aggressor Vladimir Putin are still being questioned. Despite overwhelming military superiority, Russian troops suffered heavy losses. Military convoys make little progress across the country, also because of population resistance, and progress seems to have stalled several times.

Setbacks that could soon lead to dangerous developments: on Saturday, the head of the Ukrainian secret service warned against a division of his country. According to General Kyrylo Budanov, a World War II-like scenario could arise on the Korean peninsula: “Actually, this is an attempt to create North Korea and South Korea in Ukraine.” As Moscow has yet to conquer the entire national territory, Russia is now trying to create a Kremlin-controlled region.

A scenario that has become more likely in recent hours: Over the weekend, the leader of the self-proclaimed Luhansk People’s Republic in the embattled Donbass in eastern Ukraine suggested an upcoming referendum on Russia’s accession. Ukraine has already announced that it will not recognize what it calls a “false” vote.

Kremlin changed strategy due to setbacks

Intelligence chief Budanov also announced that Ukraine will soon launch a guerrilla war in the Russian-occupied territories – a war in which small groups of fighters fight domestically against foreign soldiers of the Russian army. According to Budanov, Putin wanted to take over all of Ukraine. But Kiev has stood firm, which is why the Kremlin has changed its plan and is now fighting for a division in the country.

Shortly before the February 24 invasion, Russia recognized the breakaway regions of Luhansk and Donetsk as independent. According to the Russian Defense Ministry, the army already controls 93% of Luhansk and 54% of the Donetsk region.
