South Korean Parliament Speaker ends visit to Vietnam

Bilateral ties have been developed over the past 30 years on the basis of long-standing relationships with common interests, complementary strengths and diverse achievements, Vietnamese Communist Party Secretary-General Nguyen Phu Trong noted while welcoming the visitor.

Phu Trong expressed his belief that Kim’s stay will greatly contribute to the comprehensive strategic partnership, and called for binational cooperation to be promoted more substantively and effectively, while also focusing on enhancing mutual understanding.

During the dialogue, which took place the previous day and was quoted by the PLA news agency, Kim said that the existing ties between Vietnam and South Korea are a typical example of international relations.

He also stressed that Seoul attaches importance to the position of this Indochinese nation in its new strategies and projects for the region, including the South Korean Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Solidarity Initiative.

The Speaker of Parliament was also received by Vietnam’s Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh yesterday, who said his country appreciates the expansion of investment by South Korean companies here, particularly in the fields of high technology, science, green economy and digital transformation.

Minh Chinh also reiterated to the visitor the principles of his country’s foreign policy, namely independence, self-determination, multilateralization and diversification of relations, and being a friend, a reliable partner and an active and responsible member of the international community.

He also called for closer coordination to efficiently apply the free trade agreement between the two countries and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Association Agreement (RCEP), as well as efforts to boost bilateral trade to $100 billion in 2023 and $150 billion in 2030.

For his part, Kim pledged to uphold the common vision of ensuring the safety and freedom of navigation and overflight in the Baltic Sea, maintaining a peaceful, stable and legal environment, and resolving disputes at sea through peaceful means, ensuring the legitimate rights and interests of the parties according to international law.

Also this Tuesday, the visitor was received by his counterpart Vuong Dinh Hue for a meeting where both agreed to further strengthen political trust, especially in the context of complicated regional and international events.

They also said that based on the good progress in the bilateral relationship, they agreed to expand cooperation in areas such as technological change, personnel training and defense industry.
