(ANSA) — BEIJING, MAY 10 — Yoon Suk-yeol was sworn in as South Korea’s new president in a ceremony at National Assembly Square in the presence of 40,000 people, taking office at a time of high tensions with South Korea’s north.

“I solemnly swear to the people that I will faithfully carry out my duties as president,” said Yoon, a 61-year-old conservative former attorney general, who has pledged an uncompromising stance on Pyongyang, closer proximity to the US and Japan, and a conservative agenda , especially the role of women.

South Korea’s new president has promised a “bold” relief plan to significantly improve the economy and the lives of the North Korean people if the hermit country “stops nuclear development and moves towards substantial denuclearization”.

In his inaugural speech for South Korea’s presidency, Yoon said he wanted to keep “the door open to dialogue” with the North and called its nuclear programs a “threat to our security and that of Northeast Asia.” (HAND).
