Sources – Tua Tagovailoa expected back as Dolphins starter in 2023

Tua Tagovailoa is expected to return as the starting quarterback for the Miami Dolphins for the 2023 season, league sources told ESPN.

Should the seventh Dolphins upset the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, Tagovailoa could potentially be dropped from the concussion record and work his way back into the field.

But regardless of what happens in Sunday’s wildcard round in Buffalo or during the postseason in Miami, the Dolphins have been pleased with Tagovailoa’s development this season under first-year coach Mike McDaniel, sources say.

Medical professionals are also confident that Tagovailoa can resume his NFL career next season, if not sooner, sources said.

Teddy Bridgewater, listed as questionable with finger and knee injuries, is expected to be active against the Bills Sunday, according to a source, but the veteran quarterback will serve as a backup for rookie starter Skylar Thompson.

Tagovailoa has been on the concussion log since Dec. 26 after suffering his second documented concussion of the season in a loss to the Green Bay Packers the day before.

McDaniel said last Wednesday that Tagovailoa was not cleared to resume any football activity and that McDaniel was able to rule him out due to time already missed against Buffalo.
