Sold over 600,000 copies of Red Barrels game The Outlast Trials

“We are like on a cloud. We hoped so. You really don’t dare to believe it until it happens. »

— A quote from Philippe Morin, co-founder of Red Barrels Studio

These Numbers are a continuation of the Old Montreal-based indie studio’s hit series, Outlast, now in its third game (plus an expansion). The first work, which turns 10 this year, has sold around 20 million copies since its release.

In addition, the recent success of The Outlast Trials has almost doubled the daily sales of the two previous titles, according to Philippe Morin.

Ten days ago, The Outlast Trials was one of the most streamed games on the Twitch platform and one of the bestsellers on Steam. At the time of writing, it ranks 4th in this category, behind portable cloud gaming console Steam Deck, as well as games Destiny 2 and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.

On the same site, the title collects almost 15,000 comments, 94% of which are positive.

“It gives us hope for the future. »

Early Access

The 600,000 copies sold are an achievement for an independent studio, but also for a game offered in Early Access, that is to say that, according to the comments of the public, still wants to change.

“We are still laying the foundations for the environment,” explains Philippe Morin.

“Right now, what strikes us is that there are a few things that need to be done to make the game more accessible in the first few hours of play.

– A quote from Philippe Morin

In The Outlast Trials, players attempt to survive therapy using advanced brainwashing and mind control methods.

One of the most important changes in this new work is the addition of an online multiplayer mode in addition to the single player mode.

“The movie Saw, especially Saw 2, inspired us to understand what it’s like to work with strangers you don’t fully trust and with whom you have no choice but to work together to survive.”

– A quote from Philippe Morin

The other novelty is the addition of Seasons to the game, a new model for Red Barrels that will allow them to continue The Outlast Trials.

For us, the fun begins with the seasons. “We’ve never worked on a game for so long. We have a lot of ideas that we save for later,” the studio’s co-founder notes.

The developer, which employs 45 people, hopes to release the final version of the game as soon as possible, before the end of the year.
