The Canada women’s soccer team wanted to send a message by wearing purple, a color associated with gender equality, as the players took the field for their match against the United States in Thursday’s SheBelieves Cup in Orlando.

We could read “enough is enough” on these sweaters. The Americans also joined in a hug from their longtime rivals before the start of the duel.

The Canadian Women’s Soccer Players Association (CSPA) also released a statement on social media during the game.

“Purple has historically been associated with efforts to achieve gender equality. Given the current circumstances, our players will continue to wear this color until our federation implements standards to ensure equality. […]’ we can read.

Recall that the Maple Leaf players are currently in conflict with the leaders of Canada Soccer, particularly regarding their salary conditions. They blame Canada Soccer for letting them down a few months before the Women’s World Cup.

“With only six months to go until the biggest tournament in women’s soccer history, our preparation for the World Cup and the future success of the women’s national team program will be marred by Canada Soccer’s inability to support its national teams,” we read in an earlier one last Friday press release.
