Ski helmets provide solid protection but can absorb better

Munich (dpa / tmn) – Ski helmets can save lives in case of falls and collisions on the slopes. ADAC has tested ten helmets priced between 45 and 100 euros to see how they protect in an emergency and sees the need for improvements by manufacturers.

The acceleration values measured at impact tended to be in the medium to maximum range of the norm. Translated, this means: Shock absorption properties can be improved.

Solid results without outliers

Still, all helmets in the field offered solid protection overall. With a good overall score, Scott’s “Track” (2.4) and Sweet Protection’s “Blaster II Helmet” (2.5) were the top performers. Cost: around 100 euros each.

The other helmets lined up with almost no worse ratings. At the bottom was the “H-FS 300” from Decathlon’s own brand Dreamscape, which really wasn’t far behind with a 2.9 rating, but was by far the cheapest helmet on the market at around 45 euros.

In addition to accident protection as the most important criterion, comfort and handling were also included in the evaluation.

Also check the fit of the ski goggles

Expert advice: since everyone’s head is different, winter sports enthusiasts should pay close attention to the fit and adjustment options of products when buying a helmet.

And you should check that your own ski goggles fit and close properly on the helmet. Otherwise, when riding a bike, cold air will flow through the gaps between the helmet and glasses to the skin of the face. And that can be uncomfortable.
