Sister André, “the oldest person in the world”, dies at the age of 118

The world’s oldest person, French nun Lucile Randon, died today at the age of 118, a spokesman for AFP news agency said. The elderly woman was better known as Sister André, the name she adopted after joining a Catholic charitable order in 1944.

She died in her sleep in the nursing home where she lived in the French city of Toulon (841 km from Paris). The elderly woman even survived after being infected with Covid19 in 2022.

Lucile Randon was born on February 11, 1904 in Alès, southern France. According to the Gerontology Research Group World Supercentenarian Rankings list, she was the oldest living person in the world.

“Her departure is a great sadness, but it was her wish to join her beloved brother. It’s a liberation for them,” David Tavella, an employee at the nursing home where Lucile lived, told AFP.

In her final days, she prayed and was observed by professionals specializing in palliative care.

On her 118th birthday, Lucile said she wished “to die soon”

On her 118th birthday, the elderly woman, always dressed in her usual nun’s garb and blue veil, was waiting in the room, seated in her wheelchair, her head bowed and her eyes closed, which she no longer sees.

His day started early. “At 7 a.m. they pick me up and sit at the table.” She was then led into the chapel, where the elderly woman, who became a nun after the age of 40, heard mass every morning.

“It’s terrible not being able to do anything on your own,” Lucile lamented at the time. She worked until the late 1970s and at 100 was still busy doing chores.
