A Ukrainian freighter has run aground in the Bosphorus. The strait is temporarily closed.

Special ships in the Bosphorus are trying to free the 142-meter-long Urkaine freighter that ran aground on Monday in the strait between the Black Sea and the Mediterranean Sea, Turkey’s Directorate General for Coastal Safety announced on Twitter on Monday.

Ships deliver grain from Ukraine across the Bosphorus

The incident happened near Umuryeri, between the second and third bridges over the Bosphorus. The freighter sails under the flag of the island state of Palau. It was initially unclear what the ship was carrying and whether it was traveling under the so-called Grain Agreement.

Since the summer, Ukrainian grain has been exported through the Black Sea and the Bosphorus Strait. A corresponding agreement was reached in July, brokered by Turkey and the UN, and ended the month-long blockade of Ukrainian grain exports as a result of the Russian war of aggression.
