Shane Warne’s extreme 14-day ‘liquid diet’ increases heart attack risk, expert warns

A health expert has warned that extreme diets, such as the liquid cleanse that Shane Warne was on, could increase the risk of heart attacks in people with heart problems.

Warne had just completed a 14-day “extreme” liquid diet in an attempt to lose weight before he tragically died of a suspected heart attack while on holiday in Thailand last Friday.

The 52-year-old Australian cricket legend was on a ‘boy trip’ to the luxurious Samujana Villa resort on Koh Samui when he was found unconscious in his room around 5pm local time.

Warne previously mentioned that he tried “traditional Chinese medicine” for weight loss, and his family said he would regularly go on a “30-day fasting diet” as he struggled with his weight throughout his career.

Case in point, one of Warne’s close friends – Sporting News chief executive Tom Hall, who went on holiday to Thailand with the great cricketer – revealed that Warne enjoyed a very Australian last meal, munching on Vegemite toast after completing his extreme diet of everything. a few days before.

According to the Koh Samui police, the spin bowler’s last day included a massage from two local masseuses at his villa and an order for a new, custom-made suit.

The legendary Australian bowler was a heavy smoker, recently treated for Covid-19 and struggled with other health issues.

There is no conclusive evidence linking Warne’s diet to his heart attack, and an autopsy is currently being performed on a cricketer’s body in Thailand.

However, the Heart Foundation’s chief medical adviser, Professor Harry Jennings, said there is indeed a risk that the heart could be put under additional strain from a very low-calorie diet under certain conditions.

“Mostly these risks are related to the underlying heart problem, they do not appear suddenly. I doubt they can cause heart problems on their own,” Professor Jennings told The Sydney Morning Herald.

“Basically, if your metabolism, your handling of fluids, salt, and other electrolytes is completely out of whack, if you have a small heart attack, you are more likely to develop into something serious with a rhythm disorder.”

In 2019, Warne bought a meal replacement tea from a business in Sydney, according to the publication. It was unclear if he followed the program.

James Erskine, Warne’s longtime manager, revealed Sunday that Warne has taken drastic weight loss measures, including a fluid-only diet.

According to Erskine, at the time of his death, he had recently completed an extreme and “ridiculous” cleanse, during which he only took liquids for about 14 days.

“It was a little all or nothing. It was either white buns with butter and lasagne filling in the middle, or it had black and green juices,” he said.

“He obviously smoked most of his life [but] I don’t know, I think it was just a massive heart attack. That’s what I think happened.

Thai officials do not consider Warne’s death suspicious, but also note that no alcohol or cigarettes were found inside the luxury villa.

Just five days ago, Warne shared an old shirtless photo of himself on Instagram, showing him working hard to get back in shape.

“Operation Tiny has begun (in 10 days) and the goal by July is to be back in the shape it was a few years ago! Let’s go,” he wrote.

The local police chief said Warne had visited a tailor to make a suit earlier Friday and ordered two local masseuses to come to his villa.

The investigation team said three of Warne’s friends, as well as two hotel workers and four massage parlor workers, were questioned about the circumstances of his death.

“He called the girl for a massage. It was just a massage. He didn’t die from the massage. He was unwell,” said the chief of police.

Prior to the trip, Warne’s family reportedly told authorities that he was suffering from health problems, including asthma problems and chest pains.

Meanwhile, Warne’s longtime friend, Tom Hall, opened up about the spin bowler’s last meal before his fatal heart attack.

Hall, the poker champion, wrote to Sporting News that he shared Vegemite on a toast with Warne.

“I’ve dined with Shane at a lot of great places, but instead of tasting local Thai food, we’re eating a plate of vegemite with toast.”

Shane chomps, “God you can’t beat Vegemite with a little oil, always great wherever you are.”

“Australian through and through – this was to be his last meal.”

Warne then went upstairs to talk to his children on the phone. This was the last time Hall saw him alive.

Erskine, meanwhile, told Australia’s Channel 9 Today show that Shane’s kids are in “total shock” over their father’s passing.

“One minute the kids talk to him every day, the next minute they can’t talk to him and start thinking he won’t be on my 21st, he’s not going to walk me down the aisle.”

Erskine said Warne’s children “have a much harder time than anyone” after the 52-year-old’s death.

His ex-wife and mother of his children, Simone Callahan, is said to be “very upset” at the thought of her children having to live without their beloved father.

In 2021, Jackson opened up about his relationship with his iconic father, remarking that he only saw him as a “dad” and not a sports legend like most others.

“I always remember just smiling. So I think he did a great job. And I’m proud of him,” he said.

On Saturday, Thai police said they found bloodstains in his room from prolonged CPR but ruled out foul play.

Two pools of blood were found on the carpet at the foot of Warne’s bed, as well as three blood-stained towels and one blood-stained pillow on the mattress.

Ambulance crews also reported a puddle of vomit by the bed.

Australian government officials met with Warne’s friends on Koh Samui to discuss bringing his body home to Melbourne.

It is understood that his family is desperate to avoid the father-of-three being autopsied in Thailand so that he can return to Australia as soon as possible.

But Thai authorities insisted that an autopsy be performed before his remains were handed over to his family to be sent home.

Thai police said the body needed to be examined to determine the cause of death, after which a report would be sent to the Australian embassy in Bangkok.

“We just really want to bring Shane home,” Mr. Neophytou said after meeting Thai police at the Bophut police station on Saturday.

Thai Police Lieutenant Colonel Chatchawin Nakmusik said he needed the autopsy results to close the case before handing over the body.

“I’m waiting for the autopsy report. If there is nothing suspicious, then the case is closed,” he told The Guardian.
