  • She backed down from her pro-criminal repression stance after the election

The mayor of San Francisco was paid $351,000 in 2021, more than double the salary of the city’s average worker.

Mayor London Breed earns nearly $100,000 more than New York City Mayor Eric Adams, according to The San Francisco Chronicle. According to The New York Post, Adams draws an annual salary of $258,750.

Government employees in San Francisco made between $36,000 and $601,000 last year, averaging about $127,000, the data shows.

It comes after Breed made a dramatic U-turn on her “defund the police” strategy when she called for “more aggressive policing” to tackle rampant crime.

She last year called on cities to exonerate police, announcing that San Francisco would be among the first to do so and promising to take $120 million from the budgets of their police and sheriff’s departments.

But Breed did a screeching about-face and announced that she was asking the city board for more money for the police to stamp out drug trafficking, car break-ins and theft.

Announcing a crackdown on crime, she argued that San Francisco officials should become aggressive and “less tolerant of all the cops that have destroyed our city” when she backed away from her plans to police to disappoint.

“It’s time the rule of the criminals who are destroying our city is ended,” she said. “And it ends when we take the steps to be more aggressive with law enforcement, more aggressive with the changes to our policies.”

Breed called for progressive policies that have allowed criminal behavior to flout the city’s famed tolerance and compassion, and be replaced with “more aggressive policing”.

Breed said she plans to introduce legislation that would give law enforcement officers real-time access to surveillance video in certain situations, as well as measures that would make it harder to sell stolen goods.

Her comments were a complete reversal from last year, when she announced plans to divert $120 million from the police department to a combination of new and existing programs for the African American community.

The movement to defund the police picked up steam during the 2020 protests following the police killings of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor.

But when she called to divert funds away from the police to community ventures, it was revealed that the city had spent $2.6 million on its security details in 2020.

San Francisco spent $12.4 million protecting breed between 2015 and 2020, with the bill increasing from $1.7 million in 2015 to $2.6 million last year, as reported based on information from the public transparency website Openthebooks.com and compiled by Forbes.
