Samsung copies Apple with this handy and fun feature – Frandroid

The One UI 5.1 software update brings a new feature reminiscent of another: the ability to remove the background from an image – or more simply, crop a subject – that we discovered with iOS 16.

While One UI 5.1 has just been deployed to the Galaxy S22, Galaxy S21 and Galaxy S20, a small feature that has been overlooked so far has the benefit of getting people talking. For what ? Because aside from being nice and fun, it looks like a feature already available on iOS in every way.

This novelty consists in cutting out an object, a face or any other element of an image with a single click and instantly. This then results in a sticker. This is the famous image background removal that we brought to you in June 2022 before creating a tutorial a few months later.

Tested and approved

This little trick was implemented in iOS 16 and is now available on the competition, specifically Samsung’s One UI 5.1. We were able to test this feature on the editorial Galaxy S23. Spoilers: It works very well, despite a little inaccuracy here and there.

To benefit from this, simply snap a photo, open it and press for about a second on the object or face you want to crop. A thin white border will then appear around the subject in question. A context menu then offers you the option of “copying”, “sharing” or “saving as an image” the section that will become the sticker.

Then it is quite possible to paste this sticker on another image in your gallery or send it in its raw form to a friend. On the other hand, it is not possible to drag and drop the content as is the case with iOS. On this point, One UI is much less practical.

After several tests it is clear that the result is quite convincing. Admittedly, my left wrist has a slight dropout, but it stays light. Also, the phone tends to group objects when it detects multiple ones. With my living room cabinet, he didn’t know how to insulate the vase, instead considering the edging and flower pot.

After quite an amusing montage, we tried to cut out said montage (thumbs up, my ganache sitting on the vase) to paste on another photo. As you can see, the Galaxy S23 is completely engulfed by my speaker clipping.

We are going to its limits here: Overall, this function works very well. On the other hand, and as 9to5Google points out, this novelty is exclusive to the Galaxy S23. We downloaded One UI 5.1 on a Galaxy S22 from the editorial team, but unfortunately it doesn’t take advantage of this feature.
