The Ukrainian military intercepted the call of the Russian general and killed him, according to The New York Times.

For information, the newspaper quoted two US military officials. The general’s name and whereabouts are not given.

The report confirms allegations that the Russian military is using unsecured communication channels that Ukraine has been able to intercept.

Ukraine has said it has killed four generals so far, which is unusual for such high-ranking officers.

The Times has given few details about the general, whose intercepted call is said to have led to his death.

The newspaper reported, quoting US officials, “Ukrainians intercepted the general’s call, geolocated him and attacked his location, killing him and his headquarters.”

A person close to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told The Wall Street Journal that Ukrainian intelligence has set up a special unit to hunt down high-ranking Russian commanders.

Reporting on the death of Major General Vitaly Gerasimov, who was killed near Kharkov, Ukrainian officials mentioned “significant communication problems.”

To demonstrate this, Ukraine released an audio recording of a Russian soldier reporting Gerasimov’s death to his superior.

During the conversation, the soldier said that the Russian Era communication system had stopped working in Ukraine, forcing them to use unsecured communication lines.
