MOSCOW, August 31 – Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zajárova today described the passage of two US Navy ships through the Taiwan Strait on August 28 as a provocation.
“We see it as part of a chain of provocations aimed at comprehensive containment of Beijing, additional pressure and destabilization of the situation in the region in general,” the spokeswoman said at a news conference.
In this sense, Zajárova reiterated that Taipei’s position does not contribute to strengthening security in the Asia-Pacific region; on the contrary, it makes the situation more complex and unpredictable.
The State Department official said this action by Washington forces came in parallel with the trip to the island by US politicians “who are all links in the same chain,” she stressed.
“We believe that the resolution of the Taiwan Straits scenario is a purely internal matter of China, which has the right to take measures to protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity,” he added.
Zajárova reiterated the position on Taiwan expressed by Russia on several occasions, which considers the island an indispensable part of the Asian giant.
