Rocket attacks hit the Ukrainian city of Lviv

According to Ukrainian sources, Russian rocket attacks hit the western city of Lviv on Monday morning.

There were “five violent rocket attacks at once on the civilian infrastructure of the ancient European city of Lviv,” Mykhailo Podoliak, adviser to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, wrote on Twitter. At least six people died and others were injured. There were also reports of Russian rocket attacks on Kiev and Dnipropetrovsk.

According to the governor of the Lviv region, Maxym Kosyzky, a child was among the dead. At least eight other people were injured, the governor said on the Telegram message service.

A resident of southwestern Lviv told the AFP news agency that he saw thick clouds of gray smoke rising from behind residential buildings. “The Russians continue to savagely attack Ukrainian cities from the air,” Podoliak wrote. Rescue teams are on their way to the scene, the city’s mayor, Andriy Sadowy, said on the Telegram message service.


According to the head of the Ukrainian railway company, Alexander Kamyshin, the attack also damaged railway infrastructure. He shared a photo online showing fire and smoke over a small building next to a railway. He said no passengers or railway employees were injured in the attack.

A Reuters reporter reported several detonations in Kiev. According to local authorities, several explosions were also heard in Dnipropetrovsk, in the eastern part of the country. Broadcaster Suspilne reported two wounded in attacks in the Dnepropetrovsk region.

Lviv, which is close to the Polish border, has become a refuge for refugees. Western embassies were also moved from Kiev to Lviv at the start of the war.

On March 26, the city was hit by a series of Russian air strikes. In another attack a few days earlier, the city was targeted by an airstrike that hit an aircraft repair factory near the airport. On March 13, Russian cruise missiles hit a key military base about 40 kilometers northwest of Lviv, killing at least 35 people and injuring 134.
