Russian state-owned energy giant Gazprom said on Friday it would again halt gas supplies to Europe amid mounting concerns over Europe’s energy shortages ahead of the winter months.

Gas supply through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline will be suspended from August 31 to September 2 for “routine maintenance,” but comes just a month after the energy company restored natural gas to a fifth of the pipeline’s capacity following a maintenance shutdown.

Russia said the gas shutdown was due to technical problems with the pipeline connecting western Russia and Germany, but German officials dismissed those claims, saying it was a political move amid the war in Ukraine.

Moscow has shut off gas to several European nations including Germany, Denmark, Poland, Bulgaria, Finland and the Netherlands after they refused to pay for energy supplies in Russian rubles – a condition enforced by Russian President Vladimir Putin in March started.

Natural gas prices, which have skyrocketed in 2022, rose again on Friday, making the price of the energy commodity double what it was a year ago.

Not only have countries in the European Union seen widespread inflation and the looming threat of recession, but officials are worried about how the natural gas shortages will affect Europeans in the coming winter months.

The Federal Ministry of Economics said it was monitoring the situation “in close cooperation with the Federal Network Agency,” which regulates the gas market. “Gas flows through Nord Stream 1 are currently unchanged at 20%.”

Gazprom said planned maintenance of a key compressor station along the Nord Stream 1 pipeline will be carried out in coordination with its German partner Siemens Energy.
