Richard E Grant got emotional while hosting the 76th EE British Academy Film Awards at the Royal Festival Hall in London on Sunday.
The 65-year-old actor fought back tears as he introduced the “In Memoriam” section of the BAFTA ceremony to remember those in the film industry who have died over the past 12 months.
His wife Joan Washington, a voice coach to celebrities including Penelope Cruz and Jessica Chastain, died in September 2021 after being diagnosed with terminal cancer.
Ahead of the segment, Richard said, “Tonight is a celebration of film in all its wacky, sad, funny, scary and thought-provoking forms.”
He continued, “Let’s take this opportunity to pay tribute to the members of the global film community that we have sadly lost…”

Richard then said, “In the last 12 months,” before taking a second to calm down, adding, “Sorry, her impact lives on in the film. Now let’s take a moment to remember her.”
Names such as Dame Angela Lansbury, Dame Olivia Newton-John, Sylvia Syms, Robbie Coltrane and Burt Bacharach then appeared on screen.
After the segment, Grant added that “her legacies will live on.”
The star, who is hosting the ceremony alongside This Morning’s Alison Hammond, 48, wore a dramatic floor-length white cape over his sleek tuxedo.
Acclaimed actor Richard hosted the main ceremony at the Royal Festival Hall, while TV presenter Alison Hammond will host the Bafta Studio as part of the BBC One show, an immersive experience with access to all areas.
And Grant admitted he would struggle to contain his excitement when the proceedings begin.
“I’m an unabashed fan of films and talent and always have been. I’ve never been disingenuous or, you know, indifferent,” he said.
“I guess I have to stop myself from constantly taking selfies with every nominee and winner that comes on stage. In that sense, I hope I’m the right person for the job.”
Richard and Alison were announced last month as the hosts of the event, with Richard hosting the main ceremony and Alison presenting Bafta Studio, an immersive all-round experience for the BBC One programme.

Netflix anti-war drama All Quiet On The Western Front leads the nominations with a whopping 14 nominations.
The film, based on the 1929 novel of the same name by Erich Maria Remarque, tied with Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon (2001) as the highest-grossing BAFTA-nominated non-English film in history.
Directed by Edward Berger, Felix Kammerer, Albrecht Schuch, Daniel Brühl, Sebastian Hülk, Aaron Hilmer, Edin Hasanovic and Devid Striesow can be seen in the leading roles.
Nominations include Best Supporting Actor, Director, Adapted Screenplay, Costume Design, Editing, Makeup & Hair, Original Score, Production Design and more.
It will compete against The Banshees of Inisherin and Everything Everywhere All At Once for best picture, with both films receiving 10 nominations each.
Elvis, who has nine nominations, and Tar, who has five nominations, will also compete for best picture.
The Banshees of Inisherin is about two lifelong friends (Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson) who “reach an impasse when one of them abruptly ends their relationship, with alarming consequences for both of them.”
Colin Farrell is up for Best Actor for his role in the film, but faces stiff competition as he goes up against Austin Butler (Elvis), Brendan Fraser (The Whale), Daryl McCormack (Good Luck to You, Leo Grande), Paul Mescal (Aftersun) and Bill Nighy (Living).
Ana de Armas received her first nomination in the Lead Actress category for her portrayal of Marilyn Monroe in Netflix’s Blonde.
She will compete against Cate Blanchett (Tar), Viola Davis (The Woman King), Danielle Deadwyler (Till), Emma Thompson (Good Luck to You, Leo Grande) and Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All At Once).
In the Best Director category, four of the six directors nominated for the first time are: Gina Prince-Bythewood (The Woman King); Todd Field (Tár), Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (Everything Everywhere All At Once) and Edward Berger (All Quiet on the Western Front).
There were four nominations for Aftersun, The Batman, Good Luck to You, Leo Grande, Top Gun: Maverick and The Whale.
Babylon scored three nominations. The film features an ensemble cast that includes Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, Diego Calva, Jean Smart, Jovan Adepo and Li Jun Li.
