Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) compared a New York neighborhood in Queens to China during the inauguration ceremony of a Democratic Socialist.
AOC was filmed singing the praises of newly elected Sen. Kristen Gonzalez, who defeated Elizabeth Crowley in last year’s Senate race.
As he stood before a small event in Astoria Thursday, part of AOC’s speech was posted to Twitter in which the Democrat made the statement.
She is heard referring to Astoria, a predominantly liberal neighborhood according to the poll results, as the “People’s Republic of Astoria” in the speech, referring to a story arc from the Marvel series The Avengers.

“Kristen now stands with us as the youngest woman ever elected to New York State,” AOC is heard saying in the 36-second video, posted to Twitter by New York City’s Democratic Socialists of America.
“Kristen is like the last stone of infinity for the People’s Republic of Astoria. With her election, we now have DSA members at all levels of office.’
The Infinity Stones are fictional objects in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and play a significant role in the first three phases, also called the “Infinity Saga”, of the MCU.
Brooklyn City Councilman Ari Kagan, who grew up in Belarus under Soviet rule, slammed AOC and its socialist allies, telling the New York Post they seemed to “love failed communist ideas that so many people were running from “.
“Your statement is an insult not only to Chinese Americans who left the People’s Communist Republic to live in a free democratic society, but to all Americans,” he said.
“The last thing we need here is the restoration of the system in which the government is stifling the market economy, the exchange of ideas, the free press and independent courts.”
The joke came during the inauguration ceremony for Gonzalez, who defeated Crowley big in the 59th Circuit Democratic primary, which represented portions of Greenpoint, Williamsburg and Long Island City

Others who posted on NYC DSA’s tweet warned of impending doom should socialism take over the neighborhood.
“RIP Astoria, Queens,” David Grezelcki tweeted in response to a post applauding comments from the New York City Democratic Socialists of America.

Gonzalez was officially sworn in as a Senator on Jan. 4, in which she said, “It means a lot that the youngest woman ever elected to the NYS Senate to date is a Latina and a Democratic Socialist.”
AOC and Gonzalez both share values of democratic socialism, which, according to the DSA website, refers to someone who wants to create “a system where ordinary people have a real voice in our workplaces, in our neighborhoods, and in society.”
“Capitalism is a system designed by the propertied class to exploit the rest of us for their own gain,” the website states.
In early November last year, AOC easily won re-election in its New York seat
As of 9:30 p.m. Nov. 8, with 60,000 votes counted in the state’s 14th district, AOC had 73.8 percent of the vote and her Republican challenger, Tina Forte, just 24.3 percent

“There are many paths that lead to the democratic road to socialism. Our vision goes further than historical social democracy and leaves authoritarian visions of socialism in the dustbin of history.”
