Regional Council of Medicine Punishes Directors and Obstetricians at Sofia

Regional Council of Medicine Punishes Directors and Obstetricians at Sofia Feldman Hospital Today

Three doctors at Sofia Feldman Hospital in Belo Horizonte have been fined by the Regional Council of Medicine of Minas Gerais (CRMMG) for assisting obstetric nurses and allowing them to perform ultrasound scans, which doctors use to make diagnoses.

The technical director received the penalty of suspending professional registration for 30 days. A clinical director and an obstetriciangynecologist were publicly criticized.

The Humanization of Birth and Childbirth Network responded to the CRM’s decision by launching a petition in Portuguese, English and Spanish against what it considers persecution. The petition already has 6,271 signatures.

“It is configured as a direct attack on the rights of women, people, pregnant women and babies, with an attempt to silence a national vanguard institution of this movement, an international reference in midwifery that has been working for 40 years and open paths to dismantle,” the document warns.

The text informs that nurses in countries such as the United States, United Kingdom, Sweden, Norway, Chile and Australia perform ultrasound scans on pregnant women for medical diagnosis.

“The practice has been conducted by Sofia Feldman since 2015 and is recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) and recognized by the Federal Council of Nursing (COFEN),” defends the document.

President of the Humanization of Birth and Childbirth Network and professor at the Federal University of Brasília, Daphne Rattner, says the CRM’s decision is against internationally accepted practice.

“Sofia Feldman Hospital is a national and international reference. Experts from all over the world come to see the work on site. CRM’s decision to ban nurses from performing ultrasounds is not in the code of medical ethics,” says Daphne Rattner.

In a statement, Sofia Feldman Hospital reported that “Nursing counseling is recommended in Law 7498/86, in which nurses use scientific knowledge and other sciences to structure their care.”

Also according to the note, “the inclusion of ultrasound during consultations is governed by Cofen Resolution No.”

“It is important to note that no medical diagnosis will be made during the consultation. The findings are described for the evaluation, interpretation and actions of the prenatal team or who cares for the woman during the hospital stay.”

The Regional Council for Medicine of the State of Minas Gerais (CRMMG) also said in a notice that “all processes and investigations are confidential under the Code of Professional Ethical Process (Resolution CFM 2.306/2022), not granted , hence information about them “.

According to the note, there was also an appeal against the decision to the Federal Council for Medicine (CFM), and there is still no official explanation of this appeal to the higher court.
