William and Kate, in their new roles as the Prince and Princess of Wales, were in Windsor to thank the many volunteers who acted as stewards on the day of Queen Elizabeth’s state funeral, which was instrumental in enabling police forces to control the more than 100,000 people People came to witness the passage of the ruler’s coffin to the royal palace, especially along the road known as the Long Way. It is the Dukes’ first public appearance after the funeral: they mourn like the other members of the House of Windsor until next Monday.
“It’s been a busy few days – said William – and you’ve worked long hours, so thank you.” While referring to the huge turnout for the Queen’s funeral, Kate said: “It’s incredible to think how many have come to pay homage to her”. The royal couple also spoke to Windsor Castle staff who tended to the thousands of floral tributes left by their subjects.
