Rebecca Marino loses in Toronto

Rebecca Marino couldn’t repeat her good run from last year in Montreal. At the National Bank Open on Tuesday in Toronto, she was eliminated from the start and lost to the Chinese Qinwen Zheng in three sets 3: 6, 7: 6 (5) and 6: 4.

With the score at 3:3 in the last set, Marino suffered the fateful break. She couldn’t even return to serve after that.

The 96th player in the world attempted to reach the second round of the National Bank Open for the second straight year since reaching the third round in Montreal last year. It is also the only time she has survived the first round of a WTA 1000 tournament.

Marino had done well in Washington last week. The Maple Leaf representative lost to Daria Saville in the quarterfinals after winning four straight games, including two in qualifying.

Zheng (51st) now has a date with Tunisian Ons Jabeur, the fifth favourite. The two women never crossed swords.
