The Belgian judiciary has asked the European Parliament to do so withdraw the immunity of the delegates Andrea Cozzolino e Marc Tarabellaboth involved in the alleged corruption network in the EU institutions Qatar and Morocco. This was reported by the Belgian newspapers Knack and Le Soir after confirmation by the spokesman for the Brussels public prosecutor’s office on request “that he initiated the application for the lifting of the parliamentary immunity of two members” of the institution without further information. However, the identity: “We will not name or release other information,” the authorities said Brussels. For the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, “there will be no impunity. None,” he said after effectively confirming the Belgian press’ progress. Metsola then added in a note that the European institution had done everything in its power “to assist the investigation. Corruption can’t pay off and we will do everything we can to fight them. Those responsible will find this Parliament on the side of the law.”
Vote of January 16th
Formally, this will be the request to lift parliamentary immunity first plenum possible of the European Parliament, already fixed for the next January 16. The Legal Affairs Committee then appoints a rapporteur and cases are dealt with after a hearing. The Commission then creates a recommendation to the European Parliament, which has to vote in plenary. A simple majority is sufficient to effectively lift MPs’ immunity.
