The oldest living cat in the world is called “Flossie” and, at the proud age of 26, she is almost as old as her new owner.

At 26 years and 329 days old, Flossie holds the record, the Guinness Book of World Records announced on Thursday. “I knew from the start that Flossie was a special cat, but I never thought I would be sharing my home with a world record holder,” said Vicki Green, 27, from Orpington, south east London.

“She’s deaf and her eyesight is failing, but it doesn’t seem to bother her.” Flossie is at least 120 human years old, said Naomi Rosling of animal welfare organization Cats Protection. Guinness World Records Editor-in-Chief Craig Glenday compared the cat to Jeanne Calment. At 122 years and 164 days old, the Frenchwoman is believed to be the oldest person to have ever lived. To get the record for the oldest cat in history, Flossie still has to hold out for some time: Creme Puff holds this record – the American cat was 38 years and three days old.
